Cheapest fuel in the UK in protest over duty hike

A garage owner is slashing 5 pence off his pump prices for the next 3 days in protest at the fuel duty hike coming into force this week.
Chris Woodruff, managing director at Jet’s Darsham Service Station in Suffolk is dropping the price of his unleaded to 84.9 pence and diesel to 94.9 pence, making his station the cheapest in the UK by 3 pence per litre.
He is aiming to highlight the latest fuel duty rise of 2 pence on April 1, the second in the last 6 months.
This is not the first time Mr Woodruff has cut his prices to highlight fuel tax increases – he first slashed prices last December in protest at the 2 pence rise in fuel duty.
The stunt will cost Mr Woodruff around £2000, but told PetrolPrices.com that it’s worth the money because someone needs to take a stand on behalf of motorists: “It’s purely and simply down to the fact that someone’s got to start shouting.”
Mr Woodruff is also printing 2 pence off vouchers which drivers can redeem until the Budget on April 22, during which time he hopes to make enough noise to get the 2 pence per litre hike reversed.
He believes that the Chancellor should use the Budget to reduce fuel tax to bring the UK into line with the rest of Europe, and to start spending the tax revenues on transport: “If they’d invested the money in the same place that they taxed it we wouldn’t worry as much. It’s because it’s not going back in the same pot that it makes me so angry.”
He told the East Anglian Daily Times: “People have got to understand that in Suffolk we need to have our transport and the Government is putting 5% on road transport costs in six months and it has to stop.”
Do you support Mr Woodruff? Do you agree that fuel tax should be spent solely on transportation? Do you think the Chancellor will reverse the duty increase in the Budget?

I am disabled and my car is the outside world for me I don't get enough money now so I may well end up not going out and cutting back even more on food heating etc why people like me don't go out drinking or have any pleasure a drive in the country side is out of reach now think it really bad why do the tax have to keep hitting the poorer of us it's disgusting

It is so stupid i work night shifts in suffolk and I live in norfolk so i have to drive 15 miles there and 15 miles back, funny enough there isnt a bus at 5 in the morining! Its so stupid its like their attiude is "You use a car so you should use a bus!" like they are telling people how to live their lives, and its not as if they use the money on tax to sort our roads out they are terrible potholes everywhere. I feel embrassed to talk about driving in my country with my German friends they would be so shocked to see how bad the roads are! And i agree its not the oil companies fault its the goverment who are trying to stop us use the road, last time it went high we all protested and the fuel duty came down so we should do it again! I would love to stage a protest and block anyone from using the main petrol stations maybe then they would listen!

I am no financial expert, neither am i big on conspiracy theories, just a hardworking struggling self employed painter. It occurs to me that big industry, oil companies and the like know that they can keep increasing prices because we're all too lazy too fight back , so to actually have someone standing up to them is quite reassuring, if only i had the spine or the time! Badgering local MP's and voting hasn't helped so what are we left with?

its about time direct action was taken again, it cost us as a family over £100 per week to get to work.
we dont live in london we live in scotland, time we all got off our backsides and did something

everytime I put fuel in my car I feel that I have been ripped off by the goverment .Although I am not a lover of the oil companies whenever there is a rise in crude oil prices the oil companies always get the blame ,mainly these price hikes in crude prices are due to supply and demand and speculation on the stock exchange these are natural forces of a free market.the oil companies at least do something to earn their money in production and investment and developmentof new resources. The goverment on the other hand earns more money through taxes but does absolutely nothing.I think its about time vehicle users took action we should call a day of no car use and show the goverment our objection to these high fuel taxes.

i think we can expect the cost of fuel to go up over the next few weeks or
so with an undersea uncapped well pouring b£££££££££££££'s into the
sea and b£££££££££'s more for the clean up
I am sure we will be expected to pay for there mistakes
also with the forthcoming election looming all those promises from all the major cotenders will have to be paid for by someone i have no doubt the budget after the election
will be going after what little cash there is still left in circulation and dwindleing saving accounts

i run a chauffeur company, normally to fill 4 cars every 2 days use to cost me around £420, now it costs me £550, thats £130 more, i pay around £500 more each week, £2000 more a month then 20 months ago, its killing my business, lets do something about this, i have had enough

Drove 540 miles Falmouth to NEC Birminham & back today (15 April 2010).
Diesel cost £1.29.99 / Litre at BP's M5 Exeter 'services' filling staion on the way up. BP stations on A30 west of Exeter stated price of 1.21.99 / Litre.
Who's kdding who?
AVOID BP at all costs, expecially their premium brands (supposedly 'cleaner' fuel.)

Congratulations, someone with a backbone !
We should have a go like the French and DO something.
I have had e-mails asking people not to buy at BP or ESSO. Not sure if they are correct but I have avoided any purchases just in case. I'm willing to give anything a go if it will help reduced the ridiculous cost....Even vote for the party that comes up with a fair solution.

I agree that something must be done. A friend emailed me with an idea, such as stopping people buying petrol from the big internationals making a fortune off our backs. Stop going to BP, Shell, Texaco, and others and only go to the cheapest pumps such as Morrisons, Tesco's (in some places) and other cheaper supermarket. The Internationals would have to put their prices down if less and less people fill up their cars there

i think its about time the nation took a stand if gordon brown wants votes heed better think hard about this state of affairs come on ive got two petrol stations one is an esso at 1.25 a litre and a vulture in cowdenbeath who i think is saving to buy his own island in dubia who is charging not short of 1.27 alitre and has bee ridiculously high sinnce the last protests personaly i think its time the goverment took leess of a cut and give us our petrol at what it should be usa 1.50 a gallon?????????????????????????????????
Alan April 1, 2010
I think the now fuel prices have risen yet again that there should be a nationwide stand and protest to the government that we personally cant afford the fuel and that its more money that we have to spend to get to work. I work for a transport company and with fuel prices rising the company is really struggling to turn a profit and that could even leave me without a job, i thought the government was supposed to be helping get this country back on track and not robbing us blind, they are on par with muggers but they can get away with it. We really need to stand up for what we belive in!
Darioso March 26, 2010
we have to change something people we need to stand up together!!!compare to USA we pay triple more than them!!!thats why we drive little corsas with 1.4 engines and they in us can afford easily to drive mustangs with v8 4.8 liters!!!i know becouse i have been living there for 5 years!!!now i got 2.5 v6 engine and i am strugglin to pay for petrol!!!its ashame !!!
Rich March 25, 2010
fuel protests lets have one.about time we show the greedy government were not taking any more rubbish,
Graeme Mackinnon March 18, 2010
I am behind any fuel protests and I think most of the country would be too. It is about time this government stops using the Motorist as a way to gain extra revenue. We are taxed on the wages we earn, we have to pay road tax and we are taxed a the pumps. It is ridiculous and now because they cant manage the countries finances the pound has dropped in value so therefore the price of crude oil has risen yet again impacting on the the UK motorist. it is a complete and utter Joke!!
Mick Whitehill March 18, 2010
i live in ipswich, suffolk, and i am disgusted with the rate the garages have hiked the price up,pre budget, also with the government, what the hell are they trying to do,get everyone off the road, the country would grind to a halt, damn sharpish, what it needs is another fuel protest, and this time no backing down, and i for one am up for it.....born free....taxed to death......well im sick if it.
M.goodwin March 16, 2010
why are we all putting up with this price of petrol lets do what the france do and stand up for ourselfs, we just let them get away with it, so come on fight for the right to have petrol at below a £1. lets all get togeather and make a stand,
Frank Keller March 16, 2010
the government knows they can hike petrol prices as they feel fit after all we moan but do nothing,we all have to work and car travel is the most conveniant,i hear every week people i know complaining to each other but when i suggest getting an online petition to stop using your car for a whole week they look at me gone out saying what about my job or who`s going to pay my morgage or rent,so basically the people i know are up to their eyes in debt and cant stand to leave there car at home for a day let alone a week, when are we going to wake up?,every time the companies or government put up the price of fuel or fuel tax it effects everything we touch, food prices, public transport fares, virtually everything you touch.remember one thing if you sit back or don`t vote or even voice a complaint you are helping the government get away with this organised rip off, don`t forget about your gas and electric bill`s being hiked aswell,so oil go`s up as does your gas bill electric bill, the sooner we make a stand the sooner we will achieve a fair fuel pricing system, this has to be the worst government in power since thatcher take take take.first it was the childrens milk now it`s your hard earned cash.do something or suffer.
Caroline Hampshire March 2, 2010
we need to start to campaign against these fuel prices...where will it end if we don't!! how do we do this...any advice and help would be great
David Murray January 12, 2010
the price of petrol is a rip off and to be honest the whole money system is all to pot as the government as allowed a pound to be come a 5p in value petrol a gallon 25p in 1970/71 to day £5.04p for a gallon being 4.5 ltr
Dave Smith September 30, 2009
just back from florida 28/05/09 petrol prices fell by 28 cents a GALLON while ther making it £1.50 per gall why is it so dear in uk and why can they drop prices while rip off uk can strill have high prices its about time people realise that in this country are being taken for idoits by the petrol companies and this spineless goverment
M W Dear August 30, 2009
The best way to maintain government inaction on subjects such as this is for we who pay their wages to do nothing. If everyone who wants lower petrol prices or better services writes or e mails 10 Downing street they have to listen or suffer at the Polls. We must remember we control government, not the other way around.
'Do nothing, get nothing' that is the fact of the matter.

WHEN WILL THIS GOVERNMENT STOP ROBBING THE PEOPLE WHAT ABOUT THE ELDERLY WHO'S ONLY MEANS OFF SHOPPING OR GOING TO THE DOCTOR OR HOSPITAL HAS THE GOVERNMENT GIVEN THE POOR AND PENSIONERS ON LOW INCOME MORE MONEY NO NO NO ITS GONE INTO THEIR MONEY GRABBING POCKETS WAKE UP BRITAN SACK THE LOT. YOURS E BUXTON.
Thomasbuxton August 30, 2009
dear sir.
when will the british people start to stand up for themselves and protest against the government keep hiking the price of fuel up,at the moment they are taking 54.9p in tax thats approx.its about time that we had somebody like oliver cromwell who went into parliment and thru the parasites out.the only thing that mps are interested in these days are rock bottom meal prices in th house of common rock bottom prices for alchaholic drinks, free travel subsdised traved housing which costs absolute thousands.the meps are even worse they are a bigger load of scroungers than anybody. yours t buxton.
Aurwen Mills April 19, 2009
I feel like crying when I read about prices of 86p per litre etc. In Llandrindod Wells the Ridgebourne garage (18th April) was 102.9p. Other local garages are not far behind. Living in a rural community all my life I witness first hand how the locals in particular are struggling due to these unrealistic price increases and the knock on effect for the local economy.
I AGREE WITH JAMES PAGE. WE SHOULD HOLD ANOTHER STRIKE BUT NOT LEAVE IT TO THE HAULAGE COMPANIES TO FIGHT EVERYONES BATTLES. WE MUST STAND UP AND BE COUNTED.
It's ok for those making decisions they have EXPENCE accounts FUNDED BY US THE TAX PAYERS, their pocket's are not being hit so hard, if at all.
Enn Zed April 7, 2009
BP always first to put up their prices in New Zealand too!
That's why I'll always drive past BP and fill up at Shell even when Shell charge the same!
First to put their prices up, last on my "to buy from" preference list.
Tom April 1, 2009
the rise is stupid. my local BP garage are charging 94.9p for petrol and 103.9p for diesel after the hike. But why do they charge more than everyone else in my area? It is stupid.
Do BP charge people more everywhere than everyone else in a certain area??
Peter Fishwick April 1, 2009
our local total station put its pump prices up 2p last week in anticipation so and it has now put them up another 3p!!!!!!!!!
James Page March 31, 2009
I agree, also when petrol goes down inflation does as well, all those billions wasted on the VAT cut could have gone towards 12p -15p off fuel duty for a month or so, then we will see improvements in the economy, jobs saved and businesses saving money as well! I dont know why we dont do what the french do.... block everything, that would make brown and darling listen!
strike strike strike!

I wish more people in our great nation would take action like this, i remeber being in telford for 3days when the petrol was @ 80.9. By the time i left it was 86.9 how can it rise so quickly?
I wish the government would look at the bigger picture the more they hike fuel the less we drive therefore the less we spend and the less we spend we then dive even firther into a financial hole.
