Has the Budget been postponed to push through a fuel duty rise unchallenged?

In just 2 weeks fuel duty will rise again, bringing the total tax paid at the pumps to 71 pence in every pound - despite Prime Minister Gordon Brown promising not to raise fuel duty.

Watch Brown pledge to freeze fuel duty. (1.40m - 2.02m)

Fuel duty is set to rise by roughly 2 pence per litre on April 1st meaning that 66 pence of the average litre of fuel goes directly to the Treasury.

Fuel tax goes into a central government tax pot. It's not necessarily allocated back out to motoring, so fuel tax can be spent on anything – the NHS, housing, pensions or even banking bailouts.

At the height of soaring pump prices Brown made a promise during Prime Minister's Questions on July 16th 2008 not to raise fuel duty for a year.

He stated: "In recognition of the problem people face with petrol, we are freezing duty on petrol for the full year."

Brown broke this promise in December 2008 when he added 2 pence per litre to fuel duty to offset the reduction of VAT to 15% - a move which angered UK hauliers who are able to claim fuel VAT back, but not fuel duty.

He is set to break the promise for a second time on April 1st when fuel duty on unleaded and diesel will rise 1.84 pence per litre. Including the additional 15% VAT on top this will make the rise at the pumps around 2 pence per litre.

The Treasury have said that the only time further changes to fuel duty can take place are at the next Budget – which has been postponed from March until April 22nd, after the duty rise comes in.

Do you think the Budget has been postponed to push through a duty rise unchallenged? Do you think it's fair that 71% of the cost of a litre of fuel goes directly to the Treasury? Should Brown be held to account for breaking his promise not to raise fuel duty? Leave a comment below and let us know your thoughts.

IF ONLY WE WHERE ALL IN THE GOVERNMENT CABINET THEN WE WOULD GET ALL OUR PETROL PAID FOR BY THE PUBLIC, THIS LABOUR LEADER IS NOT IN TOUCH WITH THE REAL WORLD AND THE PROBLEMS NORMAL FAMILIES HAVE TO JUGGLE WITH, THEY JUST WANT TO FLEECE THE POPULAS AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE VIRTUALLY ALL FAMILIES HAVE A CAR SO THEY TAKE OF EVERYONE THE RICH THE POOR THE AVERAGE, WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO A GOVERNMENT, OF THE PEOPLE,FOR THE PEOPLE,BY THE PEOPLE? THIS RISE IS NO BENIFIT TO ANYONE.

Its a disgrace we're already paying far too much for fuel. The price of a barrel of oil is its lowest for years and yet we're still paying more than we did when it was higher 12months ago.

Posted by David Holt, 18th March 2009 4:32pm

Lets just hope this is one of the "final flaps of the dying duck" ! We only have to hang on for another year or so and then we can vote them all out !

Posted by Garth Davis, 18th March 2009 4:33pm

How can the self serving lot of them claim to be representing us.! They only care about how much they can stash away for when they get thrown out of office. There is no jusification for a rise in Fuel Tax and Gordon Brown knows it, but then he never tells the truth about anything.

Posted by Michael Mcniff, 18th March 2009 4:33pm

Yet again the motorist and hauliers are hammered! I suppose it should not really come as a surprise as every government of every hue has done the same to us motorists over many years, nay decades.

Posted by Kevinarnold, 18th March 2009 4:33pm

We used to have motoring organisations which stood up for drivers when legislation was clearly unreasonable or downright unfair. I wasn't around at the time, but I believe this is largely why the AA was originally formed. Now it seems they are far too busy making money by selling insurance etc. rather than forcefully representing their members.
Of course another increase in tax for the motorist is unfair, but the government love it because it is so easy to collect.
Brown's claim that we are better placed than most countries in the world to weather recession is now shown to be totally untrue. His claim that his plan for recovery has saved the world is laughable - and his latest claim (today) that he entered politics in order to help people is frankly insulting to all except the professionally unemployed layabouts.

I think it is totally unfair to raise duty yet again when he said he wouldn't fuel in this country is vastly more expensive than other countries, how much more can we really take.

Posted by Stacy Harper, 18th March 2009 4:34pm

You would think in these hard times Gordon Brown would think twice about this. The Government take enough already and we are being hit every which way. Petrol has already been creeping up again slowly but surely. We are probably the most expensive country in Europe for Petrol as well as everyting else. The whole thing just infuriates me.

Use the money to find a fuel free/eco alternative, or at least better public transport system!

Posted by Penny George, 18th March 2009 4:35pm

Yet more warped logic and underhand tactics from this government in the current climate-'do as I say not as I do' I believe is the expression-and we are all supposed to swallow it.
Need one say more-why are we surprised anymore!

Posted by E.howerd Ellis, 18th March 2009 4:35pm

The increase in fuel duty is going to hit everyone, so much for helping us get out of this recession.

Posted by Jeremy Cameron, 18th March 2009 4:35pm

Come on Gordon Brown..........................When are you going to walk ?

Posted by Kim Thomas, 18th March 2009 4:35pm

I thought the whole point of the credit crunch was to get people spending again. If the fuel prices are going up again, people will reign in the days out and stay close to home. All the haulage costs will now rise in line with the fuel prices and therefore food and everything else that is hauled. Bread and dripping is looking mighty inviting.

Posted by Pamela Wilson, 18th March 2009 4:35pm

Brown seems to think that he can milk the motorist and they will stand for it. He has to realise that the majority of motorists vote, and the answer is to make certain he does not get back into office at the next election or for that matter ever again. he has virtually wrecked the economy in this country and there is little we can do about it apart from grin and bear it. I will grin and bear it till he is booted out of office.

Posted by David Hutchison, 18th March 2009 4:35pm

Doesn't matter wether its fuel, Gas, Elec - as long as it is an "essential" that we cannot live without you can guarantee the prices will rise!! As someone has said, oil prices have dropped considerably recently so why hasn't Petrol / Diesel and domestic fuels? It is so the government and all the FATCAT bosses still get their bonus's while the real hard working people are being made redundant, having their pay cut or having to work more hours for no more money. Labour have always screwed the uk population and will do so as long as they are in power!!!

Posted by Rob B, 18th March 2009 4:36pm

When fuel goes up it is not just private motorists who suffer. Everyone suffers, because rising fuel costs mean higher prices for food and all other commodities. Even people without cars have to pay more to live. I thought we were supposed to be boosting the economy.
It's a disgrace!

Posted by Kathleen Crook, 18th March 2009 4:36pm

Haven't we had enough?

Credit cruch, falling interest rates & now an extra 2p per litre on fuel.

Come on play fair. Why not REDUCE it by 2p and give us all a big help!!

Posted by Richard Abbotson, 18th March 2009 4:36pm

With more and more people being thrown out of work and needing to look further and further from home, the only way of searching these jobs out is to travel by car as other forms of transport are unreliable and costly.
We , Joe Public are the easy touch for raising extra taxes of this type and it is time we all stood together and made it known to this Government that enough is enough!!!. It has got to the point now where I think they are extracting the urine.

Posted by Bill Rogers, 18th March 2009 4:37pm

I don't want to jump on the band wagon for the sake of it, but I feel there is just cause to be exasperated for so many things that now seem to punish the driver.
The money that is raised from increases may be useful for helping pensions and banks etc, but why should revenue raised from drivers be used to support institutions that have mis-managed the funds in their care and broken the trust that was put in them by so many.
The very people that are affected by these failures are now being charged extra for their fuel.
66 pence is a vast proportion that is taken by the Government and promises
are broken again.
In an ideal world we will be greener, and I try to do my bit to recycle my rubbish into seperate boxes and see it all tipped into the same area in the back of the truck. I drive a hybrid car, and our tiny country on the world map may be greener than some places, but unless America and China follow our example the effort is wasted. Our efforts will be symbolic rather than effectual.
The Government do not provide better public transport, there is no viabal alternative to driving for many, and it's all well and good to say drive less and walk, but the government allowed superstores to be built which made many small local stores close, and companies moved to places where empoyees had to drive, and people have school runs and houses in more rural areas to drive to. Now all of that is in place they want to pull the rug out. People have to drive until a better alternative comes along, so we are a captive supply of extra money for the coffers.
Oil goes up and the prices rise overnight. The oil goes down and the prices stay high for days. Something does not add up.
The life of the driver is unfair, this rise is unfair, but people are right, one day it will all come to an end. This government will not help drivers, and the next government will probably be no better. The oil will run out one day, and I wonder what kind of a world we will leave for our children, but this government should think of the bigger picture and look at viable alternatives. Stop hammering the motorist.

Posted by Nigel, 18th March 2009 4:37pm

As soon as there is a call for everyone in the UK to drive at 10 mph for 3 minutes at 0830 on a specific day, I will take part as a aprotest against this evil government. What a visible peaceful protest that would be.

Rip-off Britian strikes again. Can't wait to get out of this country.

Posted by Martin Lake, 18th March 2009 4:37pm

I don't think anyone's really surprised about this. Lets face it, all government people seem to be totally corrupt these days and only in it for what they can get out of it. So of course they've to raise taxes, how else will their massive incomes and expenses get paid. Until we can get proportionate voting we're always going to be stuck with either Labour or Conservative and they're both as bad as each other - so lets face it, the future is bleak!

Posted by Sheena Fraser, 18th March 2009 4:38pm

Roll on a decent electric car!!

Posted by Terry Haylock, 18th March 2009 4:38pm

It's disgusting that we, the tax paying public are being further penalised in the middle of a recession. Remember the days when diesel was cheaper than petrol, why is it so much more expensive to produce now? surely the infrastructure is still there and the process itself is the same.

The fuel companies certainly won't be feeling the effects of the recession - they are (as usual) laughing all the way to the bank.......which we are probably propping up using OUR taxes to pay for their stupidity.

The price of oil has dropped by around $100 a barrel since last July, the price at the pump has dropped by 30p, admittedly the exchange rate isn't as favourable now but when was the last time a fuel company said "pennies are tight, we are barely breaking even on the fuel we supply for your vehicles".........they profit millions a DAY from the gases emitted from the refining process, and then further profit from pushing the prices up at the pump.

Posted by David Humphreys, 18th March 2009 4:38pm

It wont be long before the VAT goes back up plus a bit extra to cover the lose over the last few months.

I agree with Margaret Millar did anyone notice any benefit fromt he reduction in VAT..

Take Take Take!!!

So, the Government continue to commit suicide - our pound has almost vanished, our savings interest is almost nil (though the Government still take 20% of ANY small interest we DO make) we, the people of this Country who have paid through the nose in taxes have bailed out the banks due to failure by Government to keep a watchful eye on those at the top of the banking industry and even though the money we have - if you are lucky to be till in work - is worth less, Mr. Brown is about to break his word and slam a further increase on Fuel Tax !! Why hasn't the price at the pump not come down anyway, considering that the World crude price has drastically dropped? Prices are quick enough increased when the price for crude goes UP!!! I have also lost out despite having been PRUDENT (that word again) all of my working life - Taxed on earnings which I then saved; then taxed on interest of those savings and the final insult, I have lost, due to very poor management within banks, a chunk of my savings which the Government had taxed me over and over again on!! Do I now get a refund on my taxes for loss of capital?????
A very disgruntled retired serviceman.

Posted by Neil Trotter, 18th March 2009 4:38pm

I used to travel about 1000 miles a month, not anymore because I just cannot afford the fuel cost, plus all the other increases.
And again the Government break promises.....we elect these people into government (well some do) because of everything they promise but once they are in then its hell to the people, they seem a law unto themselves, as do many others, i.e. banks, building societies etc. We are in a recession, large companies, small companies all struggling to survive, yet another blow beneath the belt. Sooner the election the better..... But then who to replace Brown!!! None of them can be trusted to work FOR the people, only their own pockets.

I totally agree with Gordon Hepburn, 72 above.

Posted by Shelagh Norris, 18th March 2009 4:38pm

This is an outrage! The price of fuel has gone down but now this incompetant government are putting up the tax again. Is this more on the sly to shore up the banking industry???

Posted by Eileen O'rourke, 18th March 2009 4:39pm

This really is no surprise, just when people are going to start using there cars again for Summer? holidays etc.
There is No NEED for yet another fuel tax rise, penalise the motorist again. It has been a joy paying under £1 a litre for fuel.
Come on Mr Darling join the real world, We need our cars to commute, Public transport is still not reliable enough and Taxi's are becoming far too expensive in these Credit Crunch times

Posted by Bill Crawford, 18th March 2009 4:39pm

Not being content with so many job losses, and several businesses failing, why not just make it that little more challenging by hitting everyones pocket with increases in fuel, which will no doubt have a knock on effect with the transport industry etc.

What a great time to do this, whilst everyone is trying to cut corners and save that lttle extra at this gloomy time.

It can only be Mr. Browns government!!!

Why no cut all their expenses to an absolute minimum and give that back to the treasury - it'll probably add up to the same witht he number of policiticans out there!!

Posted by Parag Bhargava, 18th March 2009 4:39pm

Having to use a 4 x 4 for its designed use and not as a Chelsea Tractor I am getting penalised once again. Its about time we stood up and were counted in this country. Get rid of this pesky Government who seem fit only to reward shirkers, bank officials and anyone else who puts up a good hard luck story. Try doing my job in an electric car Mr. Brown!!

Posted by Anne Carter, 18th March 2009 4:40pm

This is the most deavious Government I can remember in my 70 years. They lie and then compound it with more lies to attempt to cover up their first lies. Gordon Brown has got us into this problem with his inability to face us with truth and his grossly inept government style and policies . Now we have to suffer because of his errors and lies we all know what to do at the next General Election and it can't come soon enough

Posted by Edmund Bailey, 18th March 2009 4:40pm

April 1st. Obviously this is a April Fool's - a cruel one, but Mr Brown wouldn't go back on his word would he. With unemployment at now over 2 million many people are having to drive further to work or find jobs and yet no one in power is giving the hard working driver a break.

Still we are paying around 90p a litre, this despite oil prices being at some of their lowest points in years, previously at a time when we would be paying around 74p a litre.

When will someon give the 28million motorists (the massive majority of them at voting age) a break.

Posted by Daniel Clay, 18th March 2009 4:40pm

How can this increase be justified when we are all being told we will not get a pay increase this year or in some cases a pay cut but all taxes seem to be going up, not HAPPY !!!!

Posted by J Cabra, 18th March 2009 4:40pm

A lot of companies are making salary cuts to get through the current difficult times (myself 10%, my wife 20%). Surely this could be carried out for those employed by the government. Save tax payers money by lowering salaries rather than losing more jobs?

Posted by Maco, 18th March 2009 4:41pm

This cowardly act to hit the people again when they're down should have one and only one outcome.............................................................

It's time for a General Election and remove this burden called Brown.

Posted by Pete Wylie, 18th March 2009 4:41pm

Is anyone really surprised. Yet again politicians going back on promises! This is typical behaviour of those put into power to represent Joe Public. Why would the politicians care about fuel duty? It's all of us that are paying their fuel bills (along with new fitted kitchens for their 2nd homes)!
If the people of the UK continue to accept everything that is thrown at them by our unfair political system then we will only see more of these sort of step backs. After all, where else in the world are the people forced to pay a 'tax' to watch their televisions?
If we really want to see changes to the political systems of lies and deceipt it's about time the people of this nation rise up and stand up for themselves.
The french and spanish are a good example of a united working class. Their governments tremble at their power. About time we did the same and took our country back from the ruling horrah henrys.
Power to the working class! Down with the establishment!

Posted by Clem P, 18th March 2009 4:42pm

The amount of taxation in this country is ridiculous and we simply accept it. It is time we started to voice our disapproval. I'm not clued up on politics or economics (at the moment) but I'd like to know where all this taxation goes?

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought taxes were to provide a better standard of living for the people. Taxes were to provide good education, health, transport and utilities. The utilities have been sold off but do we get a reduction in tax? NO. We get higher utility prices! The transport system is in meltdown. I don't have any personal experience of what the current education or healthcare is like so your thoughts would be welcome.

Here is just a list of taxes that I thought of from the top of my head, I'm sure there are many more :-

Income tax, national insurance, VAT, council tax, road fund licence, savings tax, capital gains tax, inheritance tax, insurance premium tax, cigarette tax, alcohol tax, petrol tax, tv licence and stamp duty. Where does it all go?

Oh and if you had any money left to save and put it in a pension then you get ripped off again.

Joe

Here we go again. Another rise in fuel this time it is being sneaked passed the public. HAs anyone else noticed that diesel has sneaked up again with the avergage price being 99.9p per litre?

Posted by Paul Bergman, 18th March 2009 4:42pm

This is great news!!

In the current global economic crisis it's great that the government has recognised that a lot people are struggling and are reducing fuel tax to help the general populace... oh, hang on.....

Sort it out Gordon.

Posted by Andrew Canham, 18th March 2009 4:42pm

Please Please Please don't let this increase happen especially at the hard financial times we have found ourself in now. Labour are becoming more and more unpopular with every day so I just don't understand why they would want to do this.

Posted by Alric Kitson, 18th March 2009 4:42pm

The motorist always get screwed, we don't get our fuel paid for like MP's do (sorry we pay for that as well)

Mark my words Gordon and his incompetant accountant (Darling) will regret the day they do this

I demand a fuel protest , who with me!!

Posted by Irfan Ali, 18th March 2009 4:42pm

Someone has to pay the bank bonuses and pensions. also Mr Browns when he is kicked out!

Posted by David Gibbon, 18th March 2009 4:43pm

To think that 66p out of every litre of fuel is duty is a disgrace. Unleaded is roughly 89p/litre here and so just 23p of every litre is actually paying for the fuel??? Disgraceful, yet I expect nothing less from this government, look at the economic situation.

Posted by Sarah B, 18th March 2009 4:43pm

Not a lot I can add that has'nt been said on this blog before me. Only way to stop it is mass peaceful protest.

Posted by Trevor Park, 18th March 2009 4:43pm

In these recessionary times, it's just despicable. It would be a very bad decision even if e weren't in a recession/credit crunch. Gordon Brown seems to forget just how many voters are drivers. Let's make sure he doesn't get the chance to continue this theft after the next election!

Posted by John Arthur Blaber, 18th March 2009 4:43pm

i THOUGHT WE WERE SUPPOSED TO BE WORKING ON WAYS TO CUT COSTS FOR BUSINESSES AND SO STIMNULATE THE ECONOMY, NOT INCREASE THE COST OF EVERYTHING BY TAXING TRANSPORT COSTS.

Posted by Philip Watkins, 18th March 2009 4:44pm

HEY DOES THIS GOVERNMENT NOT KNOW THERE IS A CREDIT CRUNCH ON A FREEZE IS A FREEZE PERHAPS THEY NEED TO KNOW THE DEFINITION OF THE WORD.

YOUR PUBLIC ARE STRUGGLING ARE YOU NOT AWARE!!!

Posted by Linda Pullinger, 18th March 2009 4:44pm

This government has broken so many promises since 1997 they can't be trusted at all. It's no surprise that fuel duty wiill go up despite promises to the contrary. The economy has been squandered since this government came into power and theyt are desperate for money. Brown is to blame and it must show evceryone that he was not the great chancellor he is credited with. It's a shock to the system that anyone would think that a 2.5% reduction in vat would make people spend more, Especially the men holding the nations purse.

Posted by Jim Gardner, 18th March 2009 4:45pm

Why does this not surprise me........the way this government can do and does everything it wants is truly amazing........and be sure they will blame the drivers in some way. This government i hell bent on creating divisions and havoc amongst it's people to divert attention into their own in incompetence.
Examples;
A chancellor who robs the money from millions of pensioners.......what do we do? .........allow him to become Prime Minister..
The same chancellor who somehow didn't notice that the country was heading for a recession therefore did nothing to stop it....even though we are paying him a hefty salary to do just that...
Who creates prejudice amongst people due to their weight.......including children.....when it was the government that cut physical activity in schools to allow time for target hitting exams.
Who blatantly lied about research into second hand smoke........which showed the exact opposite of what the government claimed....
Who create prejudice amongst any children on the street............after they closed all the youth centres and sports facilities rendering the same kids with nowhere else to go but the streets. A place with no adult intervention or role models.
Who made hospitals places of targets........and yes it is most hospitals......targets first and patients last........maybe they should be asking the staff of the hospitals who are working in sometimes terrible conditions and high restraints but still trying to try their best to give good care in an impossible situation
I could go on and on and on but the government will carry on taking no responsibility for their actions but instead blaming the people who are paying their bloody wages.......and setting them against each other in the process, creating a prejudiced and uninformed nation

Isn't it time to put a stop to what is now definitely not a democratic society run by politicians who will lie through their teeth even when the facts are put to them .........

As usual, the Labour government robbing the poor to pay the rich. The policy of the Labour party used to be that all people were equal, now some are a damned sight more equal than others under Browns heinous leadership. He's robbing Joe Public to pay into Gordon and his cronies pension schemes, (the underhand little git thinks we're stupid and don't know what he's about) and there will be an uprising. Sooner rather than later, I hope, we don't need theives and liars who are lining their own pockets running, or should I say ruining, the country.

Posted by Sue Leverett, 18th March 2009 4:45pm

Once again Gordon Brown has shown his true colours - the non-voted in prime minister screws a couple of more pence out of the never ending cash cow that is the vehicle owner.

Not content with bailing out the greedy banks with our money he is now taking even more of our money, in these already hard times caused by him and his cronies, to top up the government coffers.

Disgusting and hopefully he will grow a spine and get an election sorted so we can get him out of power - will the next party do any better, I doubt it, will they do any worse, I don't think they could sink any further!

Anyway, thanks Gordon, bless you for raising the petrol prices yet again, breaking yet another promise that you made the British people. You are a waste of space, please start packing up at Number 10, your time is up!

Posted by Ryan C, 18th March 2009 4:46pm

So, another price hike on fuel.

Where is this Labour government taking us next. Their promises are like piecrust (Made to be broken). Laughing when the price of oil rose and the tax revenue with it and, when the price of oil falls, making up the defecit out of the poor old motorist because he's easy prey and it's easier to get the cash out of him than fat cat bankers on bonuses and pensions.

Gordon, If you think you're right, call an election now and see what happens!!

Posted by Clive Thomas, 18th March 2009 4:46pm

I am disabled and I don't have a fortune especially now and I have a rather large vechicle to transport my wheelchair so I don't get many miles to the gallon, the only enjoyment I have is computing and sight-seeing. I am exempt from paying car tax which helps me but with the latest increase in duty I guess I will be using the computer more instead of going out for a change. This goverment as made life very difficult for normal people especially when one is disbled.
Would it not be easier if we all just got vouchers from the govermnet to exchange for food etc. Then there would be no need for MP's, that would save the country money!

Posted by Paul Morris, 18th March 2009 4:47pm

WITH SO MANY OF US NOW RECIEVING £60.50 JOB SEEKERS ALLOWANCE IT IS HARD ENOUBGH TO KEEP A VEHICLE ON THE ROAD AS IT IS, BUT YOU HAVE TO TRY, AS IT INCREASES THE CHANCES OF FINDING A POSITION A BIT FURTHER AWAY THAN PUBLIC TRANSPORT, AN INCREASE WOULD SHOW HOW MUCH THE PEOPLE THAT MAKE DECISIONS ARE OUT OF TOUCH WITH PEOPLE TRYING HARD TO FIND A JOB

Posted by Bill Whitford, 18th March 2009 4:48pm

Once again the oil companies and the goverment are happy to increase for profit and tax gains and we the public and small businesses suffer but we seem powerless to make any difference. oil companies want to make many many extra millions, they can and they will. no one will stop them

Posted by Michael Harris, 18th March 2009 4:48pm

I find it unbelievable that with the British economy reeling from the effects of the present recession, the Gordon Brown regime is about to punish the hard pressed motoring public with even higher fuel taxation within the next fortnight. The sooner this Labour Government is voted out of office the better it will be for everyone else.

Posted by Robert Edwin Venn Brown, 18th March 2009 4:48pm

Typical stuff from this government - make a big hype about pointless VAT reduction of 2.5% that does nothing for the economy and gets the rest of the world laughing at us. Then sneak in some stealth tax rises that actually make life a little more expensive again.

Personally I can't wait to see the back of Labour and the leader of the country who I never would have voted for even if given the opportunity!

Yes Gordon that's you if you are reading.

Posted by Steve Curtis, 18th March 2009 4:50pm

We have a credit crunch and shops all around are closing down or having massive discounts. But when it comes to fuel the motorist is easy prey. The Chancellor will be feeling the pinch with the amount he is getting in reduced VAT . The government ministers do not really care because they drive about in chauffeured cars and no doubt when they use a car and have to pay fior fuel they will calim it back as business expenses

Posted by John Mcneill, 18th March 2009 4:50pm

Having already downsized to more economical vehicle this grasping lot of morons are after me yet again.
With no public transport in this area unless you count the early morning stage coach which returns in mid afternoon, thus of no use in at least one direction. there is no option but to have a car. Because of the recession local firms are not keen to deliver, mobile library has been withdrawn and one of 2 post offices in 5 mile radius has closed. Are our politicians on the same planet as the rest of us?
With all this tax from the motorist what about some return and fix potholes in the roads, put more police oiut in patrol cars instead of cash cameras, and generally treat the motorist as a worthewhile part of society. If none of this is possible LOWER the Tax and VAT on fuel.

Posted by Brian Jennings, 18th March 2009 4:50pm

Typical. Motorists are an easy target; tax them until they have to walk, then they will tax tat as well. It just goes to show what Gordon Brown's promises mean.

Posted by Ken Parkin, 18th March 2009 4:50pm

Well we do have to fund, banks, football teams sponsored by banks!!? and ministers second homes and expense claims, so the money has to come from somewhere. what little they do give with one hand they quickly take back with the other.

Posted by Sue Mcgrath, 18th March 2009 4:50pm

Whats the point in putting vat down 2p and petrol up 2p? Must be about 80 percent of us drive, or get affected by fule prices in taxi/bus fares, so how do we benefit from the vat cut.

Most of my expenses are fuel. Thanks Gordon ... i can't wait for the next election!

Posted by Dave Phoenix, 18th March 2009 4:50pm

Well what do you expect from this government that pays;
1. Child Benefit to high wage earners, (Over £50k/yr.)
2. MP's that are still fiddling their expenses.

Brown got us into the current mess we are in yet he still blames the banks. We are now in huge debt as taxpayers so there is no way Brown can afford not to put up fuel duty. Instead of complaining about fuel duty we would be better to protest that we have an unelected Prime Minister who should now apologise for all his errors as both chancellor and PM and resign.

I'm think the fuel duty increase scheduled for the very near future should be scrapped. We are having enough of a hard time financially as it is at present. Leave the fuel duty as it is until the economy recovers.

No doubt there will be some other newsworthy announcement at the same time in the hope that this goes unnoticed.

Not surprised at all to be honest, another comical decision by the useless shower in office.

Fuel Rise on April 1st. Brown is obviously taking us for April Fools (Fuels). He'll be the Fool when he and his despicable Government are thrown out at the next election.

Regardless of any rises coming up , there is still little or no answer to the question
Why is Diesel on average 10p a litre more expensive in the western isles? And why should we have to pay a premium?

How about the MP's that sit on there Fat Bums and take far to much money form us have pay cuts and scrape the outragous expenses they calim for! ! Get A grip Mr Brown and sort this mess out!

of course i agree,

I'm just back from a holiday in gran canaria and was shocked that fuel is so cheap there compared to ours, it has to be imported there, and i live in grangemouth where they make the stuff.

I would have thought the PM who is "supposed" to be clever would realise that such heavy taxation is what is killing the economy here and giving us a credit crunch. He cant seem to understand that fuel is so dear that people don't want new cars anymore, and what's his answer--- Bail the car makers out too using fuel tax rises, dissapearing up his own ar** seems what he's doing here..

Phew, i feel better now...

Its a pity this is not an April fool joke..

I have lost all respect I never had for this government

Here we are heading rapidly into a deep recession so what does the government do? Hit everybody and everything with more fuel tax. Brilliant policy but no surprise there then!
As a volunteer driver we are particularly hit because our expenses cannot be raised further to compensate because if our allowances rise above 40pence per mile we are over the tax threshold and so would be taxed again on the increase so we can't win.
What a great government!
The party of the people, Bo----ks!!
When is the next general election cos for the first time in my life they will not get my vote.
EX Labour voter.

I echo the many comments made about the cost of transport in a recession. It's not going to help the economy at all. The price rise will only make things harder for those on small incomes. However the comment which hit the button was this one:

"Hi
I think this country must have lost its mind and senses. To keep on raising the cost of fuel while giving hand outs to greedy incompetient bankers is a perfect example of madness, in my opinion.
We must be the laughing-stock of Europe if not the World.
