Have you been affected by contaminated fuel?

Hundreds of cars have either broken down or are having problems and it is feared that the cause is contaminated petrol.
Petrol retailers are denying selling faulty petrol and Tescos, where many affected cars have been filled up, are saying that they have carried out tests on their fuel supplies and have not found any abnormalities
Many motorists claiming that their cars have broken down because of the contaminated fuel are being left with hefty repair bills as faults linked to petrol are not always covered by the vehicle’s warranty.
Thousands of motorists across the south of England have reported problems and the petrol seems to be affecting the oxygen sensors which are part of the engine management system and help the car run more smoothly. The suspected contaminated petrol is having the opposite effect with cars running badly, slowing down and breaking down.
Trading standards officials have now launched an investigation into the problem after receiving such a large number of complaints from motorists.
It may be possible for those affected to claim for any damages on their comprehensive car insurance policies but as it is not yet known who is liable for the problem drivers are being recommended:
- To keep their fuel receipts as proof that they have purchased contaminated petrol.
- If the car starts to run roughly or misfire, drivers should contact their car dealer or manufacturer for advice.
- If you car has broken down seek the advice of a garage. They may be able to take a sample of the petrol to keep as evidence.
- You may be advised not to drive the car, if so, do not.

On Sunday 26th September I filled up at pump 6, Shell Garage, Chiswell Green, St Albans, Herts with diesel. Shortly after filling up my car began to loose engine power. The following day I took the car to my local garage who reported that the diesel fuel was contaminated with petrol. I have the reciept to prove that diesel was put in the vehicle and not petrol by mistake. I reported the problem to customer services at Shell who have denied any resposibility. Has any one else suffered a similar experience from the same garage at Chiswell Green and possibly on or around the same date. If so please get in touch. Many thanks, Paul.

I have just had a car in to Ford for poor running/starting and have been informed that this is down to fuel contamination (water and sediment) we have the sample. The fuel was purchased at Coopers Motors in Sawtry, Cambs.. I need to know if anyone else has had similar problems with this supplier...

I today have been to tesco put in £20 of unleaded petrol,i only had say 15miles left before i filled up. This afternoon my engine management light has come on and my car which i've only had 3 months is chugging and just basically running like poo lol. I'd took my car back to where i bought it and the first thing he asked was where have you filled up? I replyed tesco to which he said thats what it will be!! I thought he was talking rubbish as i'd never heard of this problem but after researching tonight and coming on here i do now believe this may be the problem but unfortunatly i haven't retained my receipt. I will update tomorrow as the car is having a diagnostic test.

On 15th July 2010 I filled up with Diesel from Sainsburys in Chelmsford. Got all of 5 miles before losing power. Garage investigation showed some badly contaminated fuel. I'm thinking of having it analysed but don't know if I'm throwing good money after bad. Sainsburys, in common with most of the other retailers fall back on their "nobody else has complained - so we must be in the clear". Has anybody out there succeeded in pursuing any of the petrol retailers for repair costs?

In oct 09 I put £83. of diesel from morrisons, sunderland in my land rover, it started to cut out and driving erraticly. The local land rover garage I took it to the next day said i had petrol and not diesel in the tank. Morrisons deny contamination of their fuel saying they have no other complaints

does anyone find that the fuel from morrisons petrol stations makes your car drive like a bag of spanners. last week i filled up as usual and since then the car has been running terrible, i thought it was my turbo that had gone but there is no issues with the turbo. there is a severe lack of power, i added redex to it and i have power intermittantly, i let the fuel run low intentionally filled it with fuel from BP and within a half mile the power was back. have u had this problem or is there issues with my mercedes

I've worked for a small oil company for years. When we have a driver accidently mix diesel with gas we pump it out. Then we 'a few hundred gallons at a time' mix it back into a 'full' tank of diesel selling it all at the pump.
We have at this time nearly 2k gallons of this contaminated fuel we are slowly adding to good fuel.
Who should I report this to?
Mrs K Betts June 6, 2010
Further to my comments no 132 I would just like everyone to know that Tescos do not care at all if you buy dodgy fuel from them. After writing to them 3 times with our complaint and speaking to them, they really do not care at all about their customers, the best quote from their call centre staff was "our fuel comes up to the minimum standards" -well that says it all. When we bought fuel and it did not. We no longer buy anything from Tesco- food nor petrol, its their loss as over the year that amounts to a big sum of money. Having spread the word about their fuel and customer service many of our friends and colleagues are now also boycotting the store. Another thought of interest, now we are buying non supermarket fuel we are getting a noticeable amount extra miles per gallon!!!

Filled up with 50 Ltrs unleaded at Sainsbury's, Cobham, Surrey on April 24th and then again at the same station on April 29th with a further 33 Ltrs. After the second filling, the car was hesitant on acceleration and the cruise control was hunting, shown by the mpg indicator cycling up and down. A few times it felt as if the engine might cut out completely.
Just topped up half a tank from an alternative petrol station and car seems to be improving. Any one else had any problems with Sainsbury's in Cobham?

Hi all, I've just filled up with petrol at tesco in Mansfield. 3 miles later my car just cut out while driving at normal speeds with no warning. Anyone else having problems after filling up here?

Hello - I am very keen to hear from anyone who may have recently purchased a batch of what I believe to be contaminated diesel from Tesco Corstorphine in Edinburgh on 15 April 2010. Supposedly just after the storage tanks in the garage had been steam cleaned!
Having filled up £59 of diesel and drove the short distance from the petrol station to my house, the next day about 25 miles or so into my journey to work, my car experienced a severe loss of power and this continued into the weekend and the following Monday. On my back from work on the Monday, my car broke down on the M9 and I had to have my car towed to a diesel injection specialist in Edinburgh. It has been in the garage ever since and the engineer has rated the quality of diesel in my tank to be 8/10 (1 being good / 10 being very bad). The engineer has found the diesel in this tank to be very opaque, saturated with water and other contaminants following a complete drain down of my fuel system in my car and numerous inspections at a cost of what I expect will be £1000 when I finally get my reassembled car back. My entire fuel system has had to be removed, drained, inspected and cleaned of all contaminants and various parts replaced as a result of the contaminated diesel.
I bought all the diesel from this Tesco garage on 15 April and have my debit receipt with a date and time stamp. I would be interested to hear from anyone else who may have been similarly affected by a possible batch of contaminated diesel as described. I am planning on getting a sample of diesel taken from my tank sent off to Grangemouth refinery for further analysis.
Thanks.

To Paul Donnelly, 18th February 2010 Blog 126
I have found a company on the internet that will test oil and fuel - the oil lab. They said they can test my fuel at a cost of £150 to find out what percentage of my unleaded is diesel. It takes 10 days to test and the man I spoke to said they would give a report of the findings and the report would stand in a court of law. All I have to decide now is whether to go that route and spend the extra money to fight Tesco (my blog no 132) I feel I am fighting a losing battle with Tesco as they just do not care or take my complaint seriously. I know I have only bought unleaded from them, I have the receipts, Tescos arrogance annoys me so much if I do not get a satisfactory answer from them soon I shall take the drained fuel into the shop and ask for a refund ( as I see so many people doing for damaged tins, wine, bread etc.) as the fuel I bought is not up to the necessary standard!

Has anyone had problems with Tesco ( Tring Rd) Aylesbury petrol in Feb/March 2010. I have filled up twice in Feb and early March. I have the receipts to show I completely filled the tank from being in the red £52.00 worth (to use my 5p off voucher) and then on the next visit put a further £22 in tank, filled to top again. After that I started getting smoke pour out the exhaust and on the third time of driving it smoke was bellowing out all over the road, pavements, etc and losing power. Only just made it to the local garage. They investigated and found I had diesel in my petrol tank. How can this happen when my till receipts clearly show I bought unleaded??? Our local repair garage has kept the fuel. We contacted Tesco HO Dundee via our local branch that we got the fuel from. They are not even interested in our problem, they do not even want to check the fuel. I understand all their fuel is tagged somehow so why will they not even check it. We are £250 out of pocket as it damaged our fuel injector. How can they just fob us off. Has anyone else had a problem at Aylesbury as they say we are the only people to complain, but having read all your other emails it looks like they fob everybody off. The local paper is interested in the story but we need to get the fuel tested first at our own expense first (another £150)!

I purchased £30 of unleaded petrol from pump No.9 BP Oakwoodgate,Birchwood,Warrington on Friday 26 March 2010.Soon after I was driving a bucking bronko and still am.I phoned the garage but they would not take any details or give any details of any other complaints.I have no receipt and paid cash but have learnt my lesson.I have reported it to consumer direct who are for legal reasons unable to confirm if any other motorists are affected. It appears motorists have no recourse if they buy contaminated petrol apart from this adding comments to this site.
Also I was unaware of continuing problems since the issues of 2007
Any other motorists affected by BP Birchwood?I did notice the week before that the adjacent pump was removed, covered with a wooded board and pump later replaced

Hi Every1, i own a vw polo 1.2 02 reg and 4 the past 6 months my var as had a idel issue, it runs fine, i replaced 3 coils and spark plugs and oil change and the car still as this issue only in idel, so i took it to vw dealer smith night fay in stockport and had a diognostics put on the car at a price of £50, when i asked them what was wrong with the car they sed, that the lamda sensor had shown a fault and the cat, but they wonted another £50 to do a compression test, i declined, the car still as idel issue and yeasterday my partner filled it up at texico and put normal unleaded fuel in the car, i have always usesd bp ultimate and for the first time in 6 months the idel issue had gone, will keep an eye on the car and keep useing normal unleaded fuel, just to se what happens

BP Garage at Jct A509 A428 near Olney, Nothants Filled up my Honda 650 on 11th March with Ultimate unleaded and got about 200m before problems of engine coughing, no smooth acceleration and holding back unexpectedly. It caused some concern to lorries on the roundabout as I tried to accelerate away but actually slowed down. It would tick over with choke out. Honda specialist solution = drained and replaced fuel to find diesel contamination was the cause. Unfortunately recovery of bike and fault finding left me with a bill of £321 but this included a service which seemed wise, to ensure tank, pump, filter, pipes and jets were clean and set right. Awaiting response from BP.

i purchased my fuel at Morrisons and about half hour later my car started running rough, i had a mechanic look at my car and he assured me that there was nothing wrong with the car and in hes opinion it was contaminated fuel. unfortunatly i did not get a reciept, but my wife did phone the petrol station and they denied having contaminated fuel, that was some four weeks ago now and my car is still running rough, i was told that to keep replacing the fuel as normal and it will work its way out but after reading your notice im not now sure what to do.

I purchased petrol on 2 occasions after Christmas for my American classic car in Asda Omagh. (I have both receipts). The car started to run badly, would not accelerate, was backfiring and the fumes were terrible. I asked at the store if there had been complaints, the lady told me there had been one to her but she had been off alot and there may have been complaints to the other staff on duty. I took the car to an American specialist mechanic for analysis to be informed that he too had filled his vehicle that day and had a similar experience and had to be towed home. He too complained in store. He is currently investigating the cause and repair necessary. This was highlighted on BBC News in January 2010 as BP apologised for water contamination in their fuel in Northern Ireland. So far BP are the only ones to own up to their problem. The staff at Omagh filling station did not take a written record about my or my mechanics complaint.
I placed a complaint through Asdas website but after over a week did not receive a reply. I complained by phone and resubmitted my complaint to the member of staff. He responded quickly stating that he had forwarded my info to the petrol trading team.
As a month has almost passed without a response I contacted the local store manager and gave him the correspondence I have. I explained that I had been speaking to many others who had experienced problems with their cars but had not made the connection with the fuel. All had filled in and around the same date.
He apoligised for the manner my complaint had been handled. He contacted me later by phone to say that I must contact Trading Standards and have them test the fuel in their tanks now Almost 2 MONTHS later. I told him that I have 20 gallons of fuel but he said that this would not be tested. Trading Standards say they dont test for contaminants, rung the manager back and was told to ring local council, no luck, rang Customs and Excise and they have no responsiblity for testing contaminants. Rang the manager back he says he will try to find out who can test the fuel. But whats the point as 2 months have passed. Damage is in excess of £1000.

I filled up at the Laindon in Essex Tesco on the 12th Jan 2010 with a top up of Diesel, after 90 miles the car stopped it's been in the garage ever since as all the injectors have failed, everything is pointing to contaminated fuel so far it has cost £700 to try and prove it, and the car is still off the road, I reported it to Tesco, 4 days ago and they haven't even contacted me yet, has any one else had trouble after filling up at this petrol station?
Claire January 16, 2010
My husband put £10 of diesel in our car this morning and it broke down shortly after leaving the forecourt - he then managed to get it started and a couple of miles closer to home and it broke down again and this time had to be towed to a garage. They hooked it up to a computer and said it is not a problem with the engine but looks fuel related and it looks like the car hasd petrol in it. I contacted Asda and they said that this is not possible and they have had no further reports of problems. The garage is going to drain the fuel on Monday so we will know for sure - has this happened to anyone else and does anyone have advice - it was Asda in Milton Keynes?

I would like to inform you of a decision that was made in a small claims court today. I own a small sucessful business called Cut`n`Cover in Spetisbury. On the 5th March 2009 I bought some fuel from an esso petrol station at Dorchester, Wimborne . My tank was showing empty. I bought £20 worth of diesel. Afterwards, I had only done about 2-3 miles driving when the van cut out and had to be restarted. This happened twice. A little further down the road my glow light was flashing. I read the hand book and it said to drive slowly and straight to the nearest garage. I took my van to Hendy Ford on the Nuffield Ind Est Poole. They then checked the van out and found there was a fuel fault. On taking the tank off there was water in with the diesel. I was shown by their head mechanic the evidence. I then went back to the petrol station and made a complaint. The lady at the till said the manager was not there and to make a complaint to Exxon Mobile direct. This I did and their response was there was nothing wrong with their fuel. So I had to take this to the small claims court. When I went this morning Exxon Mobile had a barrister which is something I could not afford! The outcome was that even though I had an invoice from Hendy Ford saying the damage was caused by the contaminated fuel and a reciept of payment I should have got a scientific report. The court did not belive what Hendy Ford had said or me and I lost the case. I feel this to be very very unfair, I am a small business trying to survive this ressesion and I put diesel in my tank which ruined my engine, lost work and caused me a lot of stress, all of which is not my fault!! Is the law on there side?? Regards W

My 2003 dodge Ram 2300 cummings diesel is in the shop due to contaminated fuel, to the cost of over 7 thousand dollars. The contaminiation looked like lanllin ?
"snot" floating in the fuel drained from the tank and included a masive ammount of rust and water. (my fuel tank is plastic) I always get my fuel from no more than one or two places. If any one has a diesel rig put on an aftermarked fuel filter and water seperator. I know lanalin / is a by product of Bio Diesel of which I will never buy. I dont know for sure where I bought the bad diesel when I called and complained I was told I was the only one, however I have been watching the diesel pump at the station on Kitsap Way Bremerton WA and never see other vehicles fueling up, makes me wonder. I know I will never buy diesel there again.

Filled up my car with diesel at asda watford on sunday 22October 2009 and on tuesday the car lost power while driving. the engine started misfire. called Rac and they suggested wrong type of fuel may be the cause. Am 100% sure had put diesel in the car and even have the receipt. The car is at the garage and mechanic says its fuel contamination. I will have the fuel tested in the coming week to confirm it. HAVE ANYONE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THE DIESEL AT ASDA WATFORD???

I bought £30.00 of unleaded petrol from BP filling station in Stalybridge, Cheshire, Greater Manchester. About 2 mins around the corner my car broke down and the RAC confirmed that my fuel was contaminated with dirty water!!
I am still trying to claim my money back for the repair of my car and the fuel which all amounts to £235.00!! Still no money back and its nearly been 2 weeks since it happened now!!
Has anyone else had the same problem in my area???

Husband filled Cab at Asda Cumbernauld on Mon 16th Nov 2009 approx 4.30pm. Later that evening cab broke down , towed to garage next morning-
need new fuel pump £480 or thereabouts ,
full tank of diesel drained £60-£70,
loan to pay for garage bill
and time off road ,
never mind time to run about to garage, all down to contaminated fuel. Has also happened to 3 other cab drivers , another 2 of whom dieselled up that weekend 13th & 15th Nov 2009- same pump- cabs taken to different garages too.
Asda not really that interested , little more than coincidence. Informed Trading standards , who took a sample on wed 18th Nov.told can take up to 8weeks to get tested .Funnily enough pump 1 & 2 was closed on Sunday 22nd Nov , at around 4-4.30pm, with a guy checking the pump - I asked him was there a problem with it - he said yes there was , and then backtracked and became VERY defensive !!! Whats that all about?
So will be calling Trading Standards regarding that - could be nothing , but you just don't know?

I am the person who put in comment 102 but since my husbands van has had to get a new engine cause contaminated fuel which was bought from Morrisons in Alloa the repair bill was £4900 but our insurance company have paid this as we are covered by our insurance but they will now fight it out with Morrisons.

I have just had a near identical issue to many of the posts here with my Audi A4. I keep all my receipts so I know that I filled up in Tescos (Sutton Coldfield start of October 2009), I had travelled about 150 miles after filling up on an empty tank. Top end power was lost and later car ran like a dog at low speeds and emission control lamp came on. Garage reported diesel was contaminated with petrol (they have kept a sample). Drained and refuelled - but only partly resolved running. Changed the emission return control valve (sooted and stuck closed) which resolved issue. Complained to Tesco who replied with stock letter "we have not other report issues...procedures to protect against contamination...not out fault....sorry".
Interested in hearing from update on post 93 (sounds like similar issue)

i purchased a diesel Citroen van a yr ago and have only put Morrison fuel in it but the last few month have been having problems with its performance so i took it to the garage and after much searching they found what the described as pond weed in the fuel tank my van is under warranty but they claim that this does not cover this problem because it is due to contaminated fuel what do i do now as the bill they have sent is over £1000 ?

Has anyone had a problem of blue paper in their deisel? My car broke down as the fuel pump became clogged up with blue paper. The only way it could have got into the tank was from the petrol pump as the filler flap is always locked. The car was filled up from Sainsbury's in Basingstoke on 3 consecutive occasions in July 2009. Sainsbury's currently refuse to accept liability for the £900 repair bill as they say they have had no other incidences. I would therefore be very interested to hear if anyone else has had a similar experience.

I filled up at asda on the 19th of sept and on mon 21st, less than 20 miles travelled my engine management light came on. The diesel specialist says water contamination, as i only use asda for my fuel they must be guilty.
Has anyone else had any probs? the bill is at £200 and may still rise if the fuel pump is faulty.
