Have you bought fuel from Morrisons before?
Morrisons have made a bold move in the current supermarket-led price war and have dropped the price of unleaded to 89.9p.

This is great news for the motorist. Many people have been paying nearer 100p for their fuel recently.

There are 276 Morrisons across the UK and you should be able to fill up at any store for these prices:
  • Unleaded: 89.9p
  • Diesel: 93.9p
We will now wait and see how the other supermarkets respond...

I think this is absolutely brilliant and others will follow! They also offer a loyalty card thing so you can save up and get money off food also! Brilliant!

hmmm..... I think that this has more to do with Brent Crude prices than the boldness of Morrisons. Crude oil is approx 12% below the peak price reached earlier in August. If the crude price goes back up (which it will) then the petrol price will go back up again.

Ah our local Morrisons is still charging 92.9 it has ALWAYS been more expensive than the Morrisons in the City (Edinburgh) we are located in the Scottish Borders which appears to be a law to its self when it comes to pricing!

I know someone who works in Morrisons petrol team at Head Office. They have systems that know the price of every single fuel sale real time and that ALL sites were charging 89.9 and 93.9 from this morning. Kevin Currie is mistaken.

Just filled up at Tesco in Burnley Lancashire unleaded 89.9p per ltr.

Posted by Len Davies, 1st September 2006 7:07pm

I filled up at my local Morrisons in Swansea, at 10pm last night and paid 89.9 for my unleaded. So what if crude oil has come down, I saved over a £1 on that tank full of petrol. Good on Morrisons for going down first, Tesco slogans is to have "lower fuel prices" and they didn't reduce their prices last night, but I bet they will go down today.

Posted by Nigel Thomas, 1st September 2006 7:08pm

morrisons in falkirk... 89.9p this morning. at last... falkirk lives in the glow of a pterol refinery and for the first time in 10 years has cheaper prices than places 10 and 15 miles away.

Posted by George Gourlay, 1st September 2006 8:36pm

Morrisons in Harwich is today 89.9. Cheapest around here. Good on them for starting a price reduction, lets hope it spreads throughout the uk. The british motorist deserves it.

Posted by Bryan Avenell, 1st September 2006 9:01pm

Just drove past Tesco in Swansea tonight, now they have dropped to 89.9p and copied Morrisons. "Every little helps" when it affects their bottom line. There is still a garage by me selling unleaded at 97.9 and thats on a main road. Ouch!!! Anyway, just filled up my wifes car in Morrisons which saves yet another 80p and I had my £5 shopping voucher off my points card.

Posted by Nigel Thomas, 1st September 2006 11:39pm

I have just filled up in a Shell garage in Glasgow and paid 89.9 - I thought I'd won a watch until I checked in here. I did however pass a BP (Big Prices?) charging 95.9 less than a mile away.

As for the comments above about Morrisons charging different prices in the Scottish borders I'm afraid it's true and I'm sure up the highlands the motorists are getting ripped off like they always do.

Nice to see smoggy Falkirk getting a decent price for a change can't ever figure out why you guys get so royally screwed sometimes.

Market Close (London) 1st Sep 2006

Spot Crude (NW/Europe) = 22.27pence/litre.
Spot Petrol (Unl/95r) = 24.00 pence/litre.
Spot Diesel (Sul/50ppm) = 29.67pence/litre.

The rest of the pack, should start to catch Morrison's over the weekend.
New York is closed Monday for "Labour Day" holiday.
Exchange rate is helping.

Can you tell me waer the nearres morrison's petrol staion ?

Posted by Barrie Smith, 2nd September 2006 9:21am

I see this morning 2.9.06 that Tesco in Barnstaple have dropped to 89.9, I am hoping others will follow, as just 12 miles away it is still 99.9 for unleaded.

Posted by Dave Latham, 2nd September 2006 9:22am

I don't know of any Morrison's filling stations here in Co.Antrim.
That is a nice price.

Posted by John Magennis, 2nd September 2006 9:41am

I travel to a dance at Horndean Hamp once a month and all ways fill at Morrisons in Horndean as the petrol is 4-5p a litre cheaper than Tesco's in Bognor. When I complained to Tescos they say they charge what the market will bear, in other words rip you off for as much as they can get away with, they first forced the local garages to close and then they raise prices now there is no option for many locals. So beware of Tescos I no longer shop there.

Posted by Bob West, 2nd September 2006 11:58am

Tesco in Bedford is down to 89.9 now. I drove past a long-closed station today - 78.9 was the price!

Posted by Niall Oswald, 2nd September 2006 4:37pm

It's about time that these large supermarket chains passed a lot of their savings onto their customers. Good for Morrisons. If they can do this then can pass a lot more savings onto their customers. And not just when it suits them, or to attract more customers at cerrtain times of the year like with christmas coming in a few months. If they can afford to do this now, then can afford to hold the prices the same throughout the year and beyond.

Posted by Anne Loat, 2nd September 2006 6:21pm

I went to fill up at Morrisons Swansea this afternoon, passed the new Tesco's and they were still charging 91.9 for unleaded, you guessed it, I drove straight past and joined the queue at Morrisons. Petrol station was very busy but well worth the wait. On my way home, the other Tesco Extra in Swansea was 89.9 on the opposite side of the duel carriageway, so why can to identical Extra stores charge more only a few miles apart??? Surely it is the same petrol.

Posted by Dean Price, 2nd September 2006 6:24pm

Hooray - Sainsbury's were promising in August - if you spent £50 instore you got 5p per litre off diesel - at 94.9p a litre that was very worthwhile. However we're back to 94.9 at the moment.

Very impressed with PetrolPrices.com - keep up the good work!

Posted by Valerie Wenham, 2nd September 2006 7:04pm

Yesterday I bought diesel at Sainsbury in Chingford for 92.9p per litre

Posted by Dariusz Wodczynski, 3rd September 2006 11:07am

Went to tescos in Hatfield and in Harlow yesterday and both places were charging 89.9 its absoloutley great :oD

Posted by Michelle Hills, 3rd September 2006 11:12am

I bought unleaded at Sainsbury's in Kidlington near Oxford yesterday (Saturday 2nd September) for 89.9p. As I also had a 5p per litre discount voucher I was very pleased to fill up at the best bargain price for some considerable time!

Posted by David Battersby, 3rd September 2006 11:52am

Just filled up at Shell in Wilmslow (north Cheshire) at 89.9 -- the bloke in the shop said he heard a rumour that prices were dropping further tomorrow Monday...watch this space!

Posted by Steve Jackson, 3rd September 2006 3:49pm

Sainsbury's at Newhaven, East Sussex, has unleaded @ 89.9p a litre today

Posted by Ian Macdonald, 3rd September 2006 5:35pm

The Tesco Extra here in Cumbernald was 89.9 for unleaded on Friday night (around 8pm); the local Asda and Shell stations have yet to follow suit, although the Sainsbury's Metro on Woodlands Road in Glasgow was 89.9 on Saturday afternoon.

Posted by William Anderson, 3rd September 2006 8:11pm

I filled up this morning at 75p a litre..... Absolutely delighted..... One Problem. It was in Calais!

Posted by Gary Slater, 3rd September 2006 11:49pm

Last night Sainsburys in Crayford (kent) were charging 89.9 p for a litre of Unleaded fuel, saved me over 3 pounds on a fill up compared with a month ago. Tescos in Sidcup (kent ) were still charging 91.9 p last night though.

Posted by Jpieter, 4th September 2006 9:51am

This always happens the day after I will up my tank after pay day - darn!

Posted by Lisa Wedgeworth, 4th September 2006 11:18am

I'm delighted to hear Morrisons have started a fuel price war but I think they only offer those prices at selected sites as my local store (Leek, Staffs) still charges higher prices. Your own info based on my post code confirms that. I think they are reacting to other local suppliers in selecting what they charge!

Posted by Mike Barke, 4th September 2006 11:26am

Supermarket fuels are a poorer grade to your Shell Xtra / BP Ultimate...Shell xtra do not charge any extra for a better grade which contains twice the dose of additives in their diesel ...BP do Charge a couple of pence for their ultimate ....However long term these grades are better on your fuel economy / performance / less polution....However like everyone says it comes down to the price no one really thinks about the long term effects.

Posted by Rachel, 4th September 2006 3:22pm

Good to see Morrisons (2 miles away) and tesco (5 miles away) drop to 89.9 in Airdrie (Near Glasgow) and good to see Falkirk are not being screwed this time around!

Posted by Paul Sands, 4th September 2006 3:35pm

Oh how I love to watch a good old price war!

Posted by Ted Sayers, 4th September 2006 3:46pm

Good news on prices, however it won't help us in north Northumberland as the local Morrisons does not have a filling station. A few years ago our local petrol retailers put pressure on the council to prevent any supermarket in the area supplying fuel, and as a result none have been given planning permission to do so. We have been paying 99.9p for diesel until yesterday when it went down to 96.9p.

Posted by William Stafford, 4th September 2006 4:06pm

Well done Morrisons for starting this off, most other garages seem to be catching up now. Oil prices have dropped another 2% today so will we see another drop in petrol prices over the next few days?

Posted by Pete Massau, 4th September 2006 4:30pm

Saved a whole £1 on a tank.....

Send up the fireworks, wave the flags etc. etc.

What on earth are we doing? How far out of your way did you go for this £1?

Be real, this is the cost of a bag of sweets, or a bottle of pop, it is meaningless - and worth nothing, except to the headline grabbers. This is Morissons Loss Leader, but it'll get the punters in and spending on other unwanted purchases, not just the fuel....oops was that may saved £1 I just spent on some crisps and coke?

Posted by Martyn Morgan, 4th September 2006 7:01pm

Good to see the prices are coming down again. The Morrisons at Ecclesfield are
charging 99. 9, pence per litre and i expect the price to drop even further within thre next week or so. keep up the good work with this site.

Posted by Alan,ashmore, 4th September 2006 7:19pm

I payed 91.9 for mine this morning at Esso, i think i will have to take a trip down to morrisons to get some next time. Keep up the good work on the site!

Posted by Matthew Crouch, 4th September 2006 10:03pm

Nice to see a morrisons in carmarthen at 89.9 cheaper than a tesco extra in llanelli as it is usually tesco cheaper by about 3-4p

Posted by Phillip Proctor, 4th September 2006 11:27pm

GET IN!!! I love driving but Ive been really struggling paying for fuel and this reduction really does make a difference. Roll on price war and this is one war We actually want!

Posted by Neil, 5th September 2006 12:02am

Sainsburys* York 89.9. No spending limits. Local garage 97.9. You know where to shop! Perhaps we could get a bit of momentum going about the other motoring taxes in the pipeline, such as "pay per mile" "Spy in the sky "etc. Numbers count. Well done todate. Keep up the good work.

Posted by Peter Chadwick, 5th September 2006 9:20am

I USED TO GO ONLY FOR DECENT CHEAP FUEL BUT SINCE WE GOT OUR VAN &
GONE SELF EMPLOYED.I ONLY GO TO MORRISONS.ITS GREAT & THEIR POINTS
SYSTEM IS ALOT BETTER. IF THEY KEEP THEIR FUEL PRICES LIKE THEY ARE
(LOW) THEN I KNOW OUR VAN & CARS WILL STAY ON MORRISONS FUEL.
KEEP IT UP MORRISONS.

Nice to see that my local BP garage have now responded to the recent price cuts by slashing their price for unleaded from 95.9 down to (wait for it...) 94.9, it was no surprise to see everybody filling up at the Shell garage about 600 yards up the road for 89.9p. BP must think we are all mugs and don't even get me started on Texaco's prices. Also has anybody else noticed that Sainsbury's only charge 2p more for a litre of super unleaded compared to regular unleaded. Why is it then that Shell, Esso and BP charge about 6-7p more for a litre of super unleaded if Sainsbury's can do it so much cheaper?

Posted by Peter, 5th September 2006 10:20am

In the West Midlands, Sainsbury's and Morrison's are neck and neck on the Petrol Front at 89.90p/litre. However on the Diesel Front, Sainsbury's now lead at 92.90p/litre as opposed to Morrison's at 93.90p/litre.

This has come about by asute forward buying by Sainsbury's.
The "Big Boys" just sit and wait for the casualties as always.

Posted by Learjet, 5th September 2006 3:17pm

Apparently, if you apply for an ASDA credit card, it entitles you for a 2p discount on all ASDA fuels. It does'nt say however, if this is for the liftime of the card or wether it's an introductory offer for a limited time.

Hi im glad tosee someone takeing an interest and the time to do something about the fuel problem in the U.K.
I am a Disabled driver and i dont have much money as i live now on state benifits. I have to go to hospital 3 times per week and my car is a life line to me but with the desiel at 99.9p per Lt i had to stop going to the hospital. I had to choose between feeding myself or putting the money in my tank.
You have my full support good luck. Brian Fitzgerald. Croydon

Posted by Brian Fitzgerald, 6th September 2006 1:43am

The Shell garage at west ewell are also selling unleaded at 89.9 & diesel at 92.9 a big difference to the garages in pulborough west sussex where i live which charge 99.9 & £1.00 or more.

Posted by Michael Gorman, 6th September 2006 1:52am

The Asda fuel card saves 2p a litre but the small print says the offer can be withdrawn at any time. Also I note that the Asda closest to me is not on the list of cheapest garages in my area (Waterlooville Hampshire) so they have obviously not matched the 89.9p of all the others.

Posted by Andrew Palmer, 6th September 2006 8:16am

Praise Buddah. Supermarket fuels have delved into the depths of charging in the 80s rather than the 90s for a litre of unleaded fuel. A national holiday in commemoration is soon to be established, I presume.
But what if I were to suggest to you that, instead of saving a couple of pence on your petrol after you go grocery shopping, stop off at your local Total garage. But "NO!", I hear you cry, "Total rip you off! I saw one on the main road once charging 91.9! You're one of them, aren't you! Scum!"
Will you get a hold of yourself? Try a tank of Tesco, then a tank of Total or Shell and marvel at the difference in acceleration, performance and, above all, economy. There is a reason why supermarkets charge less at their pumps (especially Asda; urine would make a better fuel). It's all rubbish. Take the plunge. Fill up somewhere where their only interest is to sell quality petrol. There's no better time than during a price war and you never know, you may well be converted. And your car will thank you.

Posted by Spencer Barley, 6th September 2006 11:35am

Sainsburys at Brookwood have been selling fuel at 89.9 p per litre since Sept 1st but you still have not updated your info for GU18

Posted by David Saunders, 6th September 2006 6:45pm

London Market Close: 6th Sept 2006.

Crude NW/Europe = 21.84p/litre.
Petrol Unl/95r = 23.07p/litre.
Diesel = 28.88p/litre.

Fuel Prices will continue to decline. Petrol faster than Diesel.
As Autumn approaches, Diesel consumption goes up from Industry.
Morrison's will find it increasingly harder, to hold low-price lead.

In Littlehampton ( a large populated area), we have 2 shell, 1 tesco and 1 bp in less than half a mile of each other but it is always 3p more expensive than the surrounding areas (including another shell garage only a couple of miles down the road) and has been this way the last 3 years.

I decided to try and investigate why. I called Shell who explained that their main one set its prices to the local supermarket (tesco), the other shell which is a dealership set their prices the same as the main one.
AS for BP I didn't bother because we all know they are always 2p more expensive anywhere you go in the uk!

So I then called tesco national customer services to ask why every other surrounding tesco in the area was 3p cheaper than littlehampton (if you don't believe me put BN17 into the website). They said "we are currently reviewing our petrol pricing policy and canot comment until we have finsihed reviewing our policy." I asked when this would be and the lady said that they have been reviewing it for the last 4 months and that I should keep ringing back to find out when they have a policy!!! I am disgusted because Tesco everywhere else in the country lead the way in prices, but because they can't be bothered to compete in Littlehampton, none of the other garages will either.

Shell rung me back again today and confirmed that their policy is to compete with the local supermarkets - I said that was normally a sensible policy, but in our particluar area, it was a bad policy because tesco seem to want to rip everyone off in the Littlehampton Area! - He sympathised with me but said that was the policy and there was nothing they were going to do about it!

So much for the free market, we have complete price fixing in Littlehampton dictated by TESCO!! (except BP who as stated earlier are always 2p more expensive than anyone else).

Does anyone know anyone who works in TESCO customer services or their policy unit? can you speed up their policy review?
Their website used to say "If you find petrol cheaper in the local* area, (3 driven miles - 1 driven mile inside M25) we'll refund double the difference and reduce our price to match."

Posted by Nathan, 6th September 2006 10:12pm

Nathan

Two things dictate the "Pump Price" at any given Petrol Station.

(1) Market Price of the Fuel, and whether the brand is a Refiner or Not.
(2) "Throughput Volume" of the Station, how it much sells in a given period based on the historical data of the siite. This information is very accurate.

"Competition" is a mixture of these two factors, right across the UK.

As for BP, in the West Midland Area's they are right alongside Morrison's/Asda/Tesco at 89.90p/litre, but their Station's "Throughput Volume" allow this to happen.

In the Littlehampton area, the nearest Refinery is "Fawley" run by Esso, there is a Storage Depot at "Hamble." What BP pay Esso will not even resemble what Tesco and other Non-Refiner's pay. Then you have the question of "additives" to each particular client, which can make a big difference and the type of contract in operation.

All companies review their price, around 04.00am every morning except on Sunday.

Posted by Learjet, 7th September 2006 3:49am

Actually I've just found a supplier of diesel for 80p a litre, its called Bio-diesel and yes, it is approved and from a duty paid source.

However, what is surprising is that for most people, it is unheard of. Very little publicity is given to it, and virtually no funding or tax relief is levied to its production by the Government. Yes the very same Government who try and convince us that Global Warming is upon us and we are all doomed if we don't switch to greener fuels.

Bio-diesel is a greener, enviromentally friendly fuel which is largely produced from recycled cooking oils which would otherwise be thrown / poured away by those many eateries and fast food outlets which you will find in every town - so in essence you are also recycling, which is also something which is promoted by virtually every local council.

Yet, given all of those positives, Bio-Diesel is difficult to find, and is not worthy in the UK of those reduced tax levels which other countries in Europe adopt, indeed some countries levy no tax on greener fuels such as Biodiesel whatsoever - imagine that!.

The few supermarkets which do stock it, sell it for almost the same price as road derv, so no incentive for the motorist to change there then!.

So in the meantime, i'll enjoy being a minority with my £10.50 a tankful saving by using Bio Diesel, and do my small bit for the Environment and recycling.

Posted by Oakley, 7th September 2006 1:56pm

The "Import Duty" on Bio-Diesel is 27.10p/litre, plus Vat @ 17.50%.

At 80.00p/litre Duty/Vat would equal 39.00p/litre.

Leaving 41.00p/litre to cover costs and profit, not a bad return in anybody's book. At present it's a mixture of Diesel and Cooking Oil, but qualifies as Bio- Diesel under present rules. Be careful of the percentage's for the mixture.

Posted by Learjet, 7th September 2006 7:26pm

Our nearest Tesco is in Shaftesbury Dorset.
Unfortunately Tesco never lead the way in petrol price cuts, but only match the dearest prices in the area.

Vic

Posted by Vic Ser, 8th September 2006 11:51am

The lowest price for Reg Unleaded in the West Midland area at 88.90p/litre is now held by "Texaco" surprise, surprise.

Morrison's may have started something they are unable to finish.

On the Diesel Front "Shell" now equal Sainsbury's at 92.90p/litre.

Non-Refiners buy their fuel from Refineries, it's just a question of timing.

Posted by Learjet, 9th September 2006 3:29am

I regularly travel to work past rural petrol stations, normally they are much higher, but this recent price war has encouraged them to follow suite and bring prices down - a refreshing change!

Posted by Pennmatty, 9th September 2006 10:04am

Sainsbury's is currently the cheapest by far in our area, 88.9 unleaded and 92.9 diesel. There is a Total filling station on the roundabout right next to Sainsbury's which is still charging 93.9 and 97.9, 5p per litre difference. A Shell (2 miles away) matches Sainsburys and there are a few BPs in between which are 3-4p dearer than Sainsbury's. I think Sainsbury's are cheaper than Asda at the moment

Posted by Matt, 11th September 2006 10:20pm

I see my local Morrisons went down to 88.9 for unleaded this morning. I asked them if they had gone everywhere like the other week and the girl said yes, they had a note telling evrey Morrisons nationally had to drop down to 88.9. Well done to Morrisons, especially when Tesco's are still ripping people off in places like our friend in Littlehampton when there isn't another supermarket to encourage competition. I think it would be good if petrolprices.com listed by company how many sites they have at each price, I bet their must be 100+ Tesco sites still over 90p for unleaded.

Posted by Ziggy Stardust, 12th September 2006 4:51pm

Spotted my local Morrisions garage petrol at 88.9p tonight oil prices are down to a seven month low at $62.99 a barrel, 18% drop in price since mid july hopefully will keep coming down and see the price we pay come down as well.

Posted by Barry Gilfillan, 12th September 2006 10:36pm

Announced this morning that Asda are 87.9 for unleaded nationally from today. Not sure about diesel though- hopefully that will be below 90p soon

Posted by Matt, 13th September 2006 9:26am

Petrol & diesel always seems to be dearer around, bognor, chichester & littlehampton area, just crazy, there certainly is something strange going on.

Posted by Stuart, 13th September 2006 12:07pm

Its a shame Tesco aren't following the others' lead by having one price nationally. My local store (Camborne) has no competition for miles and is still charging 94.9ppl unleaded and 96.9ppl diesel. I have emailed them but always get the same response of how they are cheapest in the local area. I certainly don't use their fuel anymore, if caught short I use a local Esso garage which is the same price, but usually I fill up when I go elsewhere (Truro Sainsburys consistently 3-5p cheaper than my local Tesco)

Posted by John Spencer, 13th September 2006 2:53pm

Good point John, Tesco are a rip-off for fuel compared to the other supermarkets. My local Tesco (Macclesfield) came down to 90.9 for unleaded yesterday but they are still a penny dearer than the next nearest Tesco, which is only 15 minutes drive away. In between there are several Shell & Esso garages selling fuel at a penny or two cheaper per litre. Tesco should follow Morrisons & Asda and have one price nationwide.

Posted by Peter, 13th September 2006 4:51pm

This comment has been removed as it was found to be in breach of our Blog Policies.

In Birmingham, there are three Morrisons stores with different fuel price. Smallheath morrison is always expensive than the other morrisons stores in town. And our local Sainsburys is always cheaper than the local morrisons so whats going on? and morrisons fuel quality?????????

Posted by A Han, 18th September 2006 1:10am

Morrisons have always been dearer than other supermarkets - and are normally slow to react.

I reckon this will be short lived - headline grabbing - they will soon return to being a penny or so dearer than other supermarkets.

Posted by Ian, 21st September 2006 11:20pm

Shock news:- in Littlehampton although still 3p more expensive than any surrounding areas - BP for the first time ever in my living memory are not 2p more expensive, but the same price. so that now makes it all six stations in Littlehampton that have exactly the same price and none of them competing with each other or charging the current leading rate of 86.9p

Posted by Nathan Lock, 23rd September 2006 11:28pm

Thanks to your Info it is still worth my while to travell the 4+ miles into Rhylr for my petrol - the shopping is also pretty good , as are the bonus points. Today I paid 86.9 per litre - can't be bad and is very welcome to pensioner on reduced income who needs her car, due to disability.

Long may this petrol war continue. Just passed Morrisons at Rochdale tonight. Unleaded 84.9p. Diesel 89.9p.
