Do you think the government should have acted before these protests?

UPDATE: Transaction 2007 have announced a firm date for the protest - Saturday 15th December 2007 at 10:00am. They say the date was decided by members as "the best possible to enable those who would normally be working during the week to attend." According to a press release on the site, they plan to protest outside refineries or storage depots across the country.

For more information, have a look at our latest blog

=======================

A group called Transaction 2007 is planning a "nationwide legal protest" this Wednesday.

You might remember the fuel protest of 2000 which initially gathered strong support from motorists. However, that support quickly turned when many motorists were prevented from filling up because of lorry blockades.

PetrolPrices.com expressed to the organisers that they may find public support for another fuel protest providing it was properly planned to be legal and orderly. So far, the Transaction 2007 organisers have been unwilling to confirm to us specifically what action they have planned for this week. When we pressed the group's spokesman, Chris Hunter, he said "This will be a numbers game levied against legislation. I can comment no further."

With fuel breaking well beyond the £1 barrier, PetrolPrices.com has had a huge rise in the number of emails from concerned motorists. People were especially angry following the last fuel duty hike imposed by the Government in October. Despite being made aware of the huge resistance from motorists, the Government pushed ahead with the 2p duty increase, leaving the public frustrated and angry. Over 80,000 people had voted against the tax hike on our blog post.

The protests of 2000 achieved some success in that the fuel duty escalator was frozen. However, it has now resumed and with the rising price of oil motorists are paying ever increasing taxation due to VAT on fuel. Unlike fuel duty which is fixed, VAT is charged at 17.5%, so for every 1p increase in the price of fuel, we are actually paying an extra 1.175p.

We'd love to hear what you think. How have the tax and oil price rises affected you? Will you be forced to tighten your belt this Christmas as a result?

Enough is enough!!! its about time there was a protest; we are one of the most highest taxed countries in the world. These have affected the price of foods and goods, so the cost of living is more expensive. Its always the motorist - speeding, parking and of course the exhorbitant price of petrol.

GIVE US A BREAK!!!!

As the owner of a landscape business The constant hike in fuel prices is very disturbing. My local garage in the past few weeks had a price increase at leist twice per week so if i needed fuel that day and left buying it to after work it cost me more money than if I had got it in the morning.
I also feel that its disgusting how the government can have a tax in this case a fuel tax and then add V.A.T on top surely this is wrong. The government is always going on about how we must curb inflation but to increase the fuel prices has a knock on effect and everything must go up in price accordingly. Seeing as we seem to follow America in most of our policy's is it not about time that we pay the same as they do at the pumps after all our currency is stronger than the dollar and as far as i know we are still an oil produceing country. My company gives full support to this demonstration and as a mainly diesel user i say we bring the price right down keep it down, and at the same time it will keep the inflation down.

I do believe the government is holding us to ransom with these high fuel prices. The ridiculous price we pay for fuel is to cover up the blunders the current government has made with regards managing their cost base and expenditure, especially those funds used for occupying countries illegally. The proportion the govenrment gets for each litre of fuel sold is huge, so an excellent source of revenue to them - the higher the price the happier they become.

They don't seem in the least bit concerned about the impact on the cost of living. A high petrol price affects everything we buy, even basic food stuffs that lower income people rely on. Of course the "Fat Cat" Ministers are protected from this as they don't have to go out and experience the high cost of living because of the lucrative income they get from running an outdated and incompetent administration. They must get real and catch up with the real world or step down and hand the reigns over to an administration that cares.

Ive received e-mails saying a boycott of BP & ESSO only may help. anyone else heard this?

I am a disabled driver great news that we are standing up against the Goverment and saying enough is enough on the price increase on fuel
of course it effects the price on food and most other goods.
I have to be very careful on the use of my car and cannot use it as I would like too. The best of luck on Wednesday

Fuel prices is just one part of it

I think the system we have is criminal u earn pound and your taxed all the way up too that pound as far as the government dear to go.
Us Brits are so placid that we just keep on accepting the rises.

the lorry driver dont realise how close they were in bring the country to its Knees.
I recall it only lasted a few days and if it had carried on just hours more we would have seen empty shelves in our shops to name just one inconvenience.

maybe it should have lasted longer, like our last stand and rid the burden all together

in Saudi petrol cost 1 real per litre (7.6 to the GBP) u do the math, ok 13 pence. yeh unbeleivable.

we the people never get asked what we would like to see happen.
its about time they did.

And we end up protesting to reverse what they tell us is going to happen instead of the other way round

de jure governing, not de facto

I would be for any peaceful legal protest 100 %

lets make that last stand!
Not for the weak hearted, dont do this at home warning and all that etc etc

Time has come to cripple the Uk with protest against high fuel prices....do what they do in France....All out protest if they do not like what their goverment is doing!

Posted by Johan Temmink, 11th December 2007 7:23pm

TAX TAX TAX TAX & more bloody tax for the motorist....If its not road tax, fines for this fines for that its the cost of the taxation on fuel...its beyond a joke.
There is also no insentive for using greener fuel options like bio fuel, this again is taxed upto the hilt...and fuels are taxed for global warming purposes....b.o.ll.o.x, if this is to combat climate change then I would happily pay BUT ITS NOT !!! its to counter act this failing governments outrageous money wasting....Gordon Brown & labour....don't waste my time you thieving bunch of Ba***rds, how they must laugh at night at us mere peasant's who by the way pay their bloody wages...
I hope this fuel protest brings at least a little missery to any of them in government but it probably won't...bend over Britian and take it up the shitta again, because we always do.....Where's the bloody door..

As a Scotsman, I am extremely upset that this excuse for a prime minister is also a Scotsman, he takes money from the hard working people by devious means and has yet to spend it sensibly. The petrol hikes are a disgrace and
there is no justification in all these massive rises. ( Except for extra tax.)
Maybe the european union ( lower case ) that he loves and lies for, will
eventually decide that a British PM is no longer required. Watch him change
his tune then....................... The man is a waste of rations.
Global Warming, good, open the Tax Chest, there is more money to come in.

RIP OFF BRITAIN

Again the government hit the driver in the pocket and then everyone else with the knock on effect of retail items increasing in price because the companies can no longer absorb the costs.

In an economic climate like ours where we have the credit crunch, mortgage costs rising, utility costs (elec and gas) showing no sign in dropping, Christmas just round the corner and the various Gov't depts losing vital confidential information (to name a few) trust in this Labour administration delivering for the people is rock bottom.

If the chancellor cut the tax everyone would be happy - even the suppliers.

COME ON BRITAIN - UNITE AGAINST THE INCREASE AND GET THE COST BACK DOWN TO SOMETHING REAL.

The USA reacted to kick start their economy and I don't think they would settle for £5 per gallon.

Posted by Steve Curtis, 11th December 2007 7:40pm

The petrol prices are ridiculous - amazing that they raise the prices just when everyone is rushing around buying xmas pressies!!! hmmmmm

Watch it drop again in the new year!

Posted by Donna Gilbert, 11th December 2007 7:41pm

The cost of fuel is a rip-off in this country. The VAT is applied to the duty portion of fuel as well as the actual cost. Why is this? It's a tax on a tax! Why not apply VAT to the cost portion and then add on the duty after. This would reduce the price of fuel a little straight away and would be fairer since we've already paid Income Tax before we even get to the forecourt. That said, the duty on fuel is extortionate in this country compared to elsewhere and the government needs to drastically reduce it before we all grind to a halt financially, and literally on the roads.

Posted by John Beckett, 11th December 2007 7:42pm

When I drive from my home in Germany to visit the UK, I make sure I fill up here or in the Netherlands. The best diesel price near where I live is 91.5 pence (€1.269) at today's exchange rate. This includes VAT at 19%. Currently the pound is weak. A stronger pound would make German diesel look even cheaper.

I'm not trying to sound smug. I just want to help motivate UK residents to challenge the duty you pay on fuel.

Best of luck with the protest on Saturday.

In the passed diesal was very much cheaper then petrol. This i beleived was because it wasn't as refined as petrol..... Look at it know, dearer than petrol. The goverment are realy cashing in on use. How long will it be before LPG is catching up with diesal and petrol?

Posted by Cliff Thurrell, 11th December 2007 7:44pm

Time for those that can to seek alternatives to the car. It'll be good practice for even higher prices and fuel shortgaes to come

Posted by Peter Bate, 11th December 2007 7:46pm

As well as the price of fuel being an issue, I am fed up with so many petrol stations in my area not providing an air line or water

Posted by Steven Dunlop, 11th December 2007 7:46pm

As an HGV driver I am sick of the price of fuel, The tax should be lowered on fuel as it will eventually be added on all goods delivered to shops, "by the shop keeper" As the price of delivery will have to go up to save the haulier. The tax has nothing to do with global warming and price of oil, its just a scam to yet again attack the motorist,They could compensate for the tax reduction on fuel by charging the foreign motorcyclist £5 car driver £10 and HGV/coaches £20 to drive on our roads when they enter our ports,Lets face it we are charged tolls abroad. Another way of clearing our roads is to limit each household to 1 car/people carrier/minibus/4x4/caravanette of their choice but it will never happen, I would demonstrate every week on my days off if the rest of the country stood behind me.Maybe take a leaf out of France's book.

Posted by Colin Bowers, 11th December 2007 7:48pm

I have been really shocked by the rapid increase in fuel costs recently. I have been smugly and legally I hasten to add, using vegetable oil in ratios up to 50% in order to combat rising costs of diesel. Luckily, my vehicle can cope and I cycle to work so have kept within my budget.
Yes, we really do need to make a stand and make a long one until the powers that be relent. However, key workers, disabled drivers and essential services should not be impeded whatever the cost. Intelligent blockades would send the goverment away to think with its tail between its legs. Imagine for example blocking all roads to parliament, or parking up and walking away from fuel pumps en masse.
We as a nation need to realise that the people have power and any government, especially ones that lie to us repeatedly, serves us, not the other way round.
Good luck to the protesters, but let's rally round and donate our fuel to those who need it if we hit a shortage.

Posted by Richard Lord, 11th December 2007 7:52pm

I will support any action taken on fuel prices I have a disabled daughter
and need transport 24 hours a day, public transport is non existent and taxis
to exspensive I filled up with diesel today and payed £79.80 thats £1.14 a
litre the goverment and suppliers are ripping us off BIG time if prices dont come down to an affordable level soon thousands of people will not be
able to afford to travel to work.I am sick of being ripped off by this
goverment and it time to show those in power what the man in the street
realy think.

Posted by Marc English, 11th December 2007 7:52pm

thank god 4 that , about bloody time what has took so long .

Posted by Jason Power, 11th December 2007 7:56pm

TAX TAX TAX and more TAX, thats all we seem to hear from this government. Its about time the motorist made a stand.

Posted by G Riley, 11th December 2007 8:00pm

Something needs to be done about the price of petrol. The oil companies and especially the government are robbing us blind.

I have to travel 40 miles a day to wok and back and have not had acost of living rise for over 6 years !

I dont know where the government think we get this extra money from.

Posted by Janet Lyon, 11th December 2007 8:03pm

I think most of us are sick and tired of this constant increase of fuel duty. If you read this Mr. Brown, (which I doubt as I am sure you are busy making the next great decision) please, please, please call a general election.

Posted by James K, 11th December 2007 8:05pm

AS SOMEONE WHO HAS TO TRAVEL 20 MILES TO AND FROM WORK EVERYDAY
I CAN ONLY SAY GO TRANSACTION GO.

Posted by Keith Homfray, 11th December 2007 8:07pm

I'm a single mum on benefits and a student. I was originally travelling by car to college as it was easier for myself and my daughter but have now had to resort to going by train thanks to fuel prices. To make matters worse the train timetable has changed so the time to get home is even more!! I wish i could use my car again but until the prices calm down ill stick to paying £12.50 a week for the train than near enough £20 for a weeks petrol!!!!!

Posted by Annabelle Fehrenbach, 11th December 2007 8:09pm

I totally agree with the protests, I backed the blockades in 2000 and I totally back them now.

However, do you not think that this lousy government might just use this as an excuse to bring in per mile charging? If they reduce the tax on petrol (which they should) they will have to reclaim it back from somewhere and my bet is that they will push through the per mile charging in order to 'offset' the cost.

Whichever way, we lose. My advice, emigrate to Canada folks, I intend to next year.....

Posted by Adrian Ward, 11th December 2007 8:13pm

Why cant we learn from the French? This government and every other one knows we the British do a lot of complaining but nothing else, hence they treat us the way they have.

Lets do what the French do every time - Lets go to the streets in solidarity and show this government and every future government that enough is enough and lets not give in even if it takes months.

When is the price hikes going to stop? petrol prices affect evrything else from the food we need and public transport prices we have no choice in using.

Posted by Edward Kaczorowski, 11th December 2007 8:17pm

I fully support the proposed protest, I hope there's one close enough for me to be able to afford the petrol to take part!

Posted by Michael Davison, 11th December 2007 8:20pm

we all have to make a stand on this issue , demonstrate your right to protest i,m sure the overstretched police forces up and down the country will manage to be out in force taking everones picture .the war on terrorism and all that rubbish . this government has to be showen that the people are sick of being ripped off .

Posted by Mr Brian Mckenna, 11th December 2007 8:21pm

I am totally sickened with this country, and the bunch of useless hooray Henry's that run it. While they are sitting in their multi million pound chambers (that we pay for), collecting their "allowances" (that we pay for) deciding how much WE taxes we should pay (usually so they can give themselves an increase), We, the working class need to spend even more time working just to try and make ends meet. I would love to think that lowering fuel prices would make a big difference to everyday quality of life, but in the end we all know the money grabbing thieves will just find another stealth tax to put it on to!

Posted by Martin M, 11th December 2007 8:21pm

The price of our fuel is ridiculous! Its just a form of taxation> Our fuel must be the dearest in the world. Now that it has broken the £1 barrier there will be no stopping the government hiking it up to god knows what.So let us all get involved and protest against this daylight robbery.

Posted by Lindamiller, 11th December 2007 8:22pm

Gordon Brown needs to live in the real world for a change & see how the other half of the population live. How come the Gov't can increase fuel duty, Road Tax exponetially, but can't give Civil Servants a decent pay rise. He & his party want to remeber who put them in Office

Posted by J.glendon, 11th December 2007 8:22pm

Good to hear that the people who drive and have pay these crazy prices have a voice on this site. We need to act now before the pumps go upto £1.50, at the rate at which it has risen over the past two months I imagine this will be in 2008. Lets make a stand, lets make a noise...

Posted by Scott Emery, 11th December 2007 8:22pm

at least turpin had the decency to wear a mask when he robbed folk!. this government repeatedly ignore the majority because they get so much revenue from these price hikes to plug a leaky hole elsewhere eg nhs/mod/mp's pensions. they are also aware that most folk (like you and me) pay so much money to legally keep transport on the road that we won't use public transport anyway. also the cost per mile is more and it takes too long. my opinion on the fuel demo of 2000 is if the truckers and farmers etc demonstrated about fuel prices for everyone instead of just themselves they would have got alot further but they didn't so when folk were coming home after queing for an hour or so at the pumps the last thing we wanted to hear was an organiser for the demo asking for extra tax relief just for businesses.

Posted by Shane Johnson, 11th December 2007 8:26pm

I agree that some kind of protest is needed but fuel prices is too narrow a target. I'd be happier with affordable fuel for those that really need up (some of the posts here) BUT with better public transport as well funded by taxing wasteful use of fuel (do we really need such big cars?). Thats a protest we could all support.

Posted by Andy, 11th December 2007 8:29pm

I totally agree with a protest against the disgraceful amount we have to pay for fuel, however, the protest should be sustained over a extended period to force the govenment and the big oil companies to reduce costs by simply not using them at all.

This can be achieved by only continuing using the supermarkets petrol stations in doing this it will force the big companies to reduce prices, therefore the supermarkets will also have to follow suit to keep thier new customers, remember (CUSTOMER IS KING!)

This will require the support of all motorists in the UK to actually be effective, If you feel angry enough get on board and get the prices reduced!

Posted by Gary Hankinson, 11th December 2007 8:29pm

I was beginning to wonder if everyone was taking this petrol price sitting down. I blame the government, as I as many do, have to travel miles to get to and from work, so they make thousands out of us who have to work to survive.

They have my full support

Posted by Maria, 11th December 2007 8:30pm

I live in the West country and have to commute to work as there is no public transport that goes near where I work. I have been driving a duel fuel car for the past 3 years as I was disgusted at how petrol was escalating in price.
Now Mr Brown is raising LPG gas prices he is suppose to be all in favour of being green, but he is taxing a green fuel which is daylight robbery both on LPG and petrol. This government are taxing people out of existence and about time we all took a stand in this country to let the government know we will not take any more tax hikes lying down. Iam all for protests and more!!!!

Posted by Lynn Healey, 11th December 2007 8:31pm

I am with the protest 100 percent, i feel that the goverment tax should be lowered as we pay too much tax as it is. Tax on your wages, tax on what you purchase, tax on how much you save, tax on when you sell your home, the list goes on. I will be supporting this protest all the way even if it goes on more than a day or a week even a month !!!!!!

Posted by Syed Ali, 11th December 2007 8:32pm

IT's ABOUT TIME THIS COMPROMISE SOCIETY OF OURS GOT UP OFF IT'S BACKSIDE AND STARTED TO PROTEST ABOUT THE WAY IN WHICH WE ARE ALL BEING RIPPED OFF BY MAJOR COMPANIES AND THE GOVERNMENT.
I AM GLAD THAT THERE WILL BE APROTEST OVER THE FUEL,THE GOVERNMENT AND THE CARTELS WANT A GOOD KICKING IN THE BACKSIDE BY THE PEOPLE OF THIS NATION AND BE SHOWN THAT WE WILL PUT UP WITH IT NO LONGER.
WILL THEY LISTEN!!!! I DOUBT IT THEY WILL RUN AWAY AND BURY THERE HEADS IN THE SAND. HOW LONG WILL IT BE BEFORE THE ELASTIC BAND SNAPS AND PEOPLE CALN'T FIND THE MONEY TO LIVE OR HAS THAT DAY ARRIVED. I HAVE RELATIVES FROM CANADA AND THE USA, WHEN THEY VISIT THEY WONGER HOW WE MANAGE TO LIVE HERE. MY ANSWER IS WE DON'T LIVE WE EXIST.

Posted by Michael Mcmichael, 11th December 2007 8:33pm

we have gone soft in this country letting the government walk all over us like this
i have to do a 60 mile trip every day to get to and from work and use a full tank of fuel every week this is now 55 pounds a week to get to work
and yet more money going to the tax man

i am sick to death of being told to get bloody public transport i start work at 05:00am every day and to get to work on public transport at this time i would have to leave to catch a bus at 20:30hrs the night before so shut up you pillocks

why do they build idustrial areas out of town with bad transport to and from the ANSWER SO YOU HAVE TO USE YOUR CAR AND PAY MORE IN TAX thtats the top and bottom of it MORE TAX

Posted by S Unsworth, 11th December 2007 8:37pm

the people of this country have to show this government who their bosses really are .i admire the frence the people dont like whats happening the people change it . fully support the protest are you listening mr brown.

Fuel prices are exhorbitant, but governments don't care about the ordinary folk. Get rid of the taxes NOW!!

Posted by W D House, 11th December 2007 8:39pm

it's about time we took a stand. Mr 'prudent' Brown must have seen this coming and did nothing. We have a social obligation to tackle the current government on such issues. Mr Brown's Premiership looks as though it may be short lived but dont think Cameron will do much better. We need an honest working class hereo chosen by the people to speak for the people!

Over a quid a litre of petrol? F**K OFF!!!!!

the action for saturday is great, the price of fuel is a f**king disgrace, have just got back from gibraltar, with it being part of the uk,how is it that they are paying 64p/litre ?? shouldnt we be paying the same ?? if not ,why on earth are we paying the highest price in europe ??
ready to protest with everyone else !!

Posted by Mark, 11th December 2007 8:43pm

I am a single parent living in a rural area, school drops are luckily done by my parents who walk my child to their local school ( I have to drop her off on the way to work). I work 10 miles from home, which may not be as far as some, but with the current fuel price and the domino effect on supermarket prices for essential products are making the financial side of things difficult. There must be some way that government can reduce the burden on tax payers. As my parents are pensioners they are entitled to the Winter Fuel allowance but if fuel all round is continuing to rise at the current rate how far will this go?? Please find a resolution for the whole country soon!!

Posted by Sam Ramsay, 11th December 2007 8:47pm

I feel that the prices in the UK is VERY HIGH and ever growing, petrol prices are very low in the USA but yet expensive here, WHY? Yet both countries play a role in all these wars and battles with other countries for OIL.
I feel that paying such HIGH taxes on petrol is out of order, I drive a low emmision car

Posted by Mohammed Umarji, 11th December 2007 8:49pm

You have my total support, and any help I can offer.

Posted by Pam Harris, 11th December 2007 8:50pm

If the government really was taxing for environmental reasons alone, they'd use that huge revenue to subsidise motorists to convert their cars to cleaner cheaper fuels like LPG, and to improve the rail freight infrastructure to stop all those lumbering HGV's clogging up the A-roads. But of course that would reduce their tax revenue, so, not surprisingly, t's not what the government are doing.

Posted by Richard Holmes, 11th December 2007 8:52pm

Because of this sites' 'Blog Policies' I have had two attempted contributions stopped because I recommended that the web site of the organisers was well worth viewing! If this contribution is allowed, and if after a visit to the first sentance,(that's a clue!) it made your blood boil even hotter,PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR MOUTHS ARE AND DO YOUR BIT! This protest is for every road users benefit whether you drive an HGV or ride a moped.(Except for the scum who don't bother with road fund licence,MOT or insurance etc!)

Posted by Karl Eastgate, 11th December 2007 8:53pm

Well, I going to be in the minority here that's for sure, but I don't agree with the fuel protests. Personally, I think that petrol is too cheap and should be at least 2 quid per litre. When are we going to wake up to the fact that we have very serious environmental problems to deal with and just carrying on the way we are is a recipe for disaster.

Climate change is going to happen whether we like it or not. The sooner we realise that the better. The debate is over - we need action NOW. Faffing around with low energy light bulbs is all very well, but we need a radical change in the way we move ourselves around. Transport in this country is one of the biggest emitters of CO2 and cars/lorries need to be tamed (and I am a motorist too by the way).

How many of you have children on this forum? How do you think future generations are going to view our wasteful ways in years to come? Stop acting like we can carry on as usual with low petrol prices as if we have some sort of divine right to drive our cars.

About time that we took a stance against rip off Britain

Looking forward to it

Posted by Clare Rice, 11th December 2007 9:01pm

It is disgusting that this "Labour!" government has done absolutely nothing to deal with the fact that the price of oil is NOT due to increased demand but the activity of speculators. Their lack of activity is due to 2 things (1) they really do not care and (2) they, as a bankrupt government, need every farthing they can get from wherever to survive the whirlwind they are bringing on their voters, mostly in England, in the VERY near future.

Posted by Bob Hedley, 11th December 2007 9:02pm

Rob,there are loads of us that would love to follow your lead.I'm disabled and like many others am on a LOW fixed income.60% of the population CANNOT AFFORD TO 'GO GREEN'!

Posted by Karl Eastgate, 11th December 2007 9:05pm

It is high time the government reduced taxation on petrol which only goes towards funding social security benefits & providing free housing for millions of imigrants who have been allowed to flood into the UK over the past years.

Posted by Mandy Williams, 11th December 2007 9:12pm

When will you people get the message that fuel should be more expensive, not cheaper. Excessive use of cars is ruining this planet, and if we keep living in this ignorant way then we're mortgaging our childrens' future.

Posted by Justin Time, 11th December 2007 9:14pm

About time the real people let their voices be heard, they are stitching us up with anything they can think of to tax us, including the air we breathe.

Posted by Michael Martin, 11th December 2007 9:14pm

I support the protestors 100%.
This is crazy; even though I live in a Cardiff suburb (with, I think, reliable bus service) I still need the car to get to and from University and work. I am a student and there is no other way to get to these places.
My dear Government, it's common sense. REDUCE the TAX on FUEL and increase the tax on alcohol.
I am not being a killjoy as I enjoy a 'responsible' drink, but the extra tax may, just may, curb binge drinking. But it will effect the sensible ones; (which is sad - I agree). But with our GREEDY Politicians, you can't have it all ways.

Have you people heard of peak oil? Oil is getting very scarce. Look it up. Prices are going to keep climbing and there's nothing any government can do about it. Sure, they could take the tax off which would bring it down slightly, but it will continue to rise.

You should all do your homework and realise that this protest is a waste of time. Read a book about the oil industry, global warming or peak oil.

Sick of paying through the teeth for petrol? Buy less! And if you actually genuinely can't get around by bicycle or public transport, then I do feel sorry for you because there's no way out of rising prices.

Hurray!!!!!!!!!!!!
Its about time some of us got together to show we are all feeling the pinch for the rising prices of the fuel.

If the government want us to votes, then they will have to bring these shocking prices down. We are already paying too much for the road tax and and the roads are in a terrible state, with lots of pot holes. So why should we pay extra for the fuel, when the government is getting fuel cheap?

Karl, it's not about "going green", it's about thinking to the future and wondering where the ever increasing traffic jams are actually taking us. Surely there has to be another way. Even if petrol was super-cheap, don't you get just a little fed up with the traffic congestion, noise, and pollution that gets worse every year? As I said, I am a motorist too but there's got to be a better way than jamming ever more cars and lorries onto this small island.

Where this government is totally wrong is in not 'ring fencing' the fuel duty revenues and ploughing that back into a superb public transport infrastructure. That way at least we could see that the revenues were actually going towards something tangible, rather than just disappearing into the general tax black hole.

Go for it!
I'm wholly for some direct action. Motorists always bear the brunt of tax hikes. Might be nice to see the Government tighten thier belts for a change, and stop squandering our hard earned money.
14 months ago it used to cost me £65 to fill up my van with diesel. Now it's more like £75. Ridiculous!

I think it's great petrol is getting so expensive. Less pollution, encourages people to move home rather than frittering their lives away driving 100 miles to work every day and means the roads are less busy. Less congestion without some over complicated expensive road toll system.

working for a small company with 6 vans covering 50,000 miles each per year
any increase is very noticeable.

Small companies need breaks from the govenment not taxing to death.

Rob get a life! This country is responsible for 2% of the total carbon emissions of the world. The MAJOR emittors do nor give a hoot, as in 2 cases,China and India They are simply striving to get to the same standards of living that we, through the same methodology, have had for decades! Can we, with any credibility, deny them this opportunity? On the other hand, watch out for government taxation strategies to "tackle global warming" that will do nothing of the sort!! Use the Road Tax as a good example-10% spent on the roads and the rest into a black hole. This "crisis" is based on computer generated projections of what might happen! This is about as logical as saying that every summer is equally warm and every winter is equally cold! This is comong from people who can't tell us what TODAYS weather is going to be like with any assured degree of accuracy!!!

I do not understand the rises in fuel - they do not coincide with retail price index, they do not co-incide with price per barrel - they have little bearing on reality -- bring the prices back to reality -- if the government cannot provide adequate and low priced public transport then we have to go places under our own steam - and then our government supercharge us again. Fuel tax, road tax, road tolls, when will it end and when will the motorist see a return in the road system on all the direct and indirect tax levied upon the motorist. time to act!!

Great ! About time we started taking a stand again in this country. Fuel hikes in one hand and lack of appropriate funding in the other for public services etc.
Im just worried about the effect of fuel blockades on the key worker, children, the elderly and infirm etc.
I dont want my children to be affected on these dark evenings, but I will walk to work if i have to.

I can't believe we have just sat back and let the government Add more and more tax to an already Over inflated Duty.
I use my Van to do my work and can travel up to 250 miles per day Fitting Satellite systems for people. Now, with the increase in Fuel Costs, and the Impending Congestion Charge for Manchester, I am looking forward to not being able to afford to work! It already costs me between £20-£35 PER DAY on Diesel, and copper prices Doubling in the last 5 years(Sat Cable) this is getting ridiculous.
And the greenies who think that we should all be carbon neutral want to Get a Life!
Who do they think is going to pay for all this Green Agenda Bull?? Them, Us, Everyone!!
Wake up, we will ALL suffer, because Prices will increase to compensate for costs.
This country is in Meltdown.
God Help Her and all who were Taxed in her!!

About time.... Hopefully the protestors wont stop just before the last hurdle and keep going to the bitter end....

I think £5.00 a litre is enough of a sobering thought to anyone that might complain about the action... except Gordon Brown that is... He must be be rubbing his hands together in glee at the thought of that money (our money) he can waste!!!

When can we have some sanity in the government??? Is it too much to ask?
