UPDATE: Transaction 2007 have announced a firm date for the protest – Saturday 15th December 2007 at 10:00am. They say the date was decided by members as “the best possible to enable those who would normally be working during the week to attend.” According to a press release on the site, they plan to protest outside refineries or storage depots across the country.
For more information, have a look at our latest blog
=======================
A group called Transaction 2007 is planning a “nationwide legal protest” this Wednesday.
You might remember the fuel protest of 2000 which initially gathered strong support from motorists. However, that support quickly turned when many motorists were prevented from filling up because of lorry blockades.
PetrolPrices.com expressed to the organisers that they may find public support for another fuel protest providing it was properly planned to be legal and orderly. So far, the Transaction 2007 organisers have been unwilling to confirm to us specifically what action they have planned for this week. When we pressed the group’s spokesman, Chris Hunter, he said “This will be a numbers game levied against legislation. I can comment no further.”
With fuel breaking well beyond the £1 barrier, PetrolPrices.com has had a huge rise in the number of emails from concerned motorists. People were especially angry following the last fuel duty hike imposed by the Government in October. Despite being made aware of the huge resistance from motorists, the Government pushed ahead with the 2p duty increase, leaving the public frustrated and angry. Over 80,000 people had voted against the tax hike on our blog post.
The protests of 2000 achieved some success in that the fuel duty escalator was frozen. However, it has now resumed and with the rising price of oil motorists are paying ever increasing taxation due to VAT on fuel. Unlike fuel duty which is fixed, VAT is charged at 17.5%, so for every 1p increase in the price of fuel, we are actually paying an extra 1.175p.
We’d love to hear what you think. How have the tax and oil price rises affected you? Will you be forced to tighten your belt this Christmas as a result?

Why do not all motorists and lorry drivers strike like back in 2000 this would cost the government and every time they try to raise prices strike and block aid this is the only way to make us heard, people are partly to blame as they do not speak up. STRIKE AND MAKE YOURSELF HEARD.

The problem is we need to protest in a way which its the fuel companies hard. not buying fuel for a day or waving banners and the like is only a temp clitch. We need to hit them reallty hard in their pockts and ‘force them’ to drop the prices.
They way to do it is for everyone to go about their normal day but make sure they use just 1 fuel supplier, preferably a smaller company. Even if it means driving that extra mile to find one.
Then just go about your day, week month. and only go back to the other pumps when they all drop their prices to below 1 pound, but everyone needs to stick to that, even when they start dropping it a little.
Effectively it will starve the fuel company of almost all of its revenue. they will barely be able to hold out for a few days like that.
Then when its below a pound we all go over to the other suppliers and the one which we were using will be forced to drop prices again.
Then if they start hiking it up we just do it again.
Would need people to be organised but would have little impact on their day.

CLOSE TO WHERE I LIVE HERE ARE THREE GARAGES THE NEAREST ON TO ME THE PRICE IS £131.9 TE SECOND JUST A QUARTER OF A MIE AWAY IS £130,>9 AND THE THIRD WHICH IS A SUPERMARKET IS £ 126.9. wHY IS THERE 5P DIFFERENCE IN LESS THAN TWO MILES?. ALL I CAN SAY IS THAT SOMEOE SOMEWHERE IS MAKING A HELL OF A PROFIT A BIT LIKE HSBC WHO SAY THEY MADE DOUBLE THE PROFIT LAST YEAR. WHY DON'T THREY PASS THIS ON TO THEIR CUSTOMERS INSTEAD OF LINING THEIR OWN POCKETS SO LEGUBRIOUSLY?

So, it is now the end of 2010 with 2011 here tomorrow and look at the fuel prices now !
Tesco have increased their prices by around 9p over the last 6 weeks and the new VAT rate due on the 4th January will push it up into the £1.30+ mark.
Here in Cardiff Tesco is charging £1.29.9 already and one Texaco Garage just 1 mile further than Tesco is charging £1.39.9.
Not a whiff of any action by anyone or any organisation so I assume that as usual the great British public will yet again whing and whine but do sod all as they are just too complacent ......unlike the French, Spanish and Italains who really do know how to protest.
When are we going to grow a pair and actually DO something ?
I know it has been said before, but if everyone just bought fuel from lets say Tesco, then other suppliers who have to drop their price to match them. You would still stay with Tesco until a company decided to better the Tesco price then we would all change to that company and wait until another under cut them and so on and it would work as they could not afford to not be selling their fuel.

I THINK THAT THERE SHOULD DEFINETLY BE A FUEL PROTEST,THE MOTORIST ARE PROBERBLY ONE OF THE HARDEST HIT TAX PAYERS IN THE COUNTRY.WE HAVE TO MAKE A STAND SOMETIME WE JUST CANNOT KEEP ACCEPTING ALL THESE PRICE INCREASES THEY KEEP THROWING AT US.MY WAGES DONT GO UP EVERY YEAR UNLIKE MP'S.THE PEOPLE IN THIS COUNTRY ARE TO SOFT WE JUST SIT BACK AND TAKE IT ON THE CHIN,WELL NOW IS THE TIME TO FIGHT BACK.THE OIL COMPANYS ARE RICHER THAN WE COULD EVER DREAM AND OUR GOVENMENT TAKE ENOUGH TAX OFF OF US WITHOUT TAKING MORE.IF WE NEVER HAD SUCH A LARGE AMOUNT OF IMMIGRANTS IN THIS COUNTRY MAYBE WE WOULD'NT HAVE TO BORROW SO MUCH MONEY.
Nathan Burley March 24, 2010
Agreed Norman!
We had riots last time before the price of petrol hit £1 now it's appraoching £1.15 near us in the north and it's much higher down south. Why is there no noise on this now??!

my local BP garage is at 1.19.9 for diesel and seeing everything in our shops come by road everything is going up why cant the government see that they are making poor people even poorer, i bought a diesel car for economy and being disabled i am on a low income but need my car to get any where what is wrong with the people of this country they just put up with all this we have become a bunch of pussies, we should have a general strike against fuel costs and make the government do something or get rid of them its within the peoples power to do this lets stop this rip off. they can bail out banks to the tune of billions how about spending some of that tax money on reducing fuel prices i am ashamed to call myself british

Government has pursued a policy of buying cheeper abroad "places that don't have high taxes and support sweat shops." Having decimated our industry and achieved more out of work than those with jobs that are now under paid. Why are the people not protesting at us paying to import busses trains and trams while selling off our gold reserves at rock bottom prices. They are now purging the people of all their savings. True money is earned but we are not free to earn it.

i think if the whole of everyone of us stick together like poeple did in 2000 then the goverment will have to listen

Our former presidents have been working on fuel and car sells for a long time. Bush made law that all car manufacturers by 2009 have gas milege of 30 miles per gallon in the over all cafe. This law was for cars not trucks. So, when has the gas price gone up? You have it, 2008. When have all the car dealers with big gas needs gone under? 2009. This is a government made crisis. Check out the laws that have been made on car dealers and car manufacturers. You will find Bush made most of these laws.

Give please. Go through your phone book, call people and ask them to drive you to the airport. The ones who will drive you are your true friends. The rest aren't bad people; they're just acquaintances.
I am from Angola and know bad English, please tell me right I wrote the following sentence: "Cheap airline tickets to bulgaria online bulgaria airline tickets booking."
With respect :o, Malaika.

If the supermarkets did not start the price reductions would the oil companies own garages have reduced theirs.
Petrol is taxed twice, we pay duty then VAT, if the goverment is serious about the high cost why do they not take the VAt off the cost altogether,, relying on the duty tax alone. This will still bring in millions.
The Channel Islands do not pay Road Fund Licence duty it is paid for in the price of fuel, yet the cost of their fuel with the Road Fund duty is still cheaper than ours, if they can do it and atill make a profit why can't our goverment do the same, no matter who is in power.Or is it because our Goverments like giving most of our money away to African dictators.

My husband is disabled and we have awheelchair accessible vehicle. He became disabled when he was 67 so he doesn't get a free road fund licence or mobility allowance,so we have to pay the full whack. He worked all his adult life and has paiid tax and NI only to find that he's banned because he was too old when he became disabled to get what people disabled at under 65 get for free, when they haven't been able to work ,and haven't paid as much into the pot as he has.
We live in a rural area, and rely completely on our vehicle.
My Mum is 88 and has difficulty walking so she relies on our vehcile too.
Isn't it about time that this unfair situation was sorted? Let us all be treated equally and not be penalised on the grounds of age. Isn't ageism illegal these days?

I am surprised at the fact that the majority of the bloggers here think that it is OK for the Oil Companies to make Huge profits for the same product. That they have been making for years telling us the same things again and again and getting away with it. Exxon alone for the first quarter of 2008 had a net (not gross) profit
of over 10 billion dollars. They have told us in Early 1980's we had a shortage of oil, The same people told us the same in 2000, 2005, and now 2008. Folks, believe what you want, but at least read between the lines, If you had a spouse that constantly told you that they were not being unfaithful, but yet they were caught with someone else more than once, wouldn't you be at least suspicious of something going on?
They tell us CO2 emissions from cars are bad, so they've raised the price of fuel.
Who stops the Volcano's from erupting!
It is a proven that one volcano eruption
emits more CO2 into the atmosphere than all of the cars in the United States combined, So why should we suffer.
create an alternate fuel source. (we have them us them) Think of it, the only reason we have soaring fuel prices is to line pockets with OUR HARD EARNED MONEY!
Then they tell the media to print something positive about high fuel prices.
(Less Traffic deaths with higher fuel cost)
But nothing about Hurricane deaths from people that could not afford to fuel up their cars to evacuate! People wake up!
In my business I have to us a truck and a trailer, to go from town to town. I can't get a tiny car to save on gas. My customers can't pay more just because Exxon wants more money from me. It's just not right.
Then I would be just the same as Exxon, raising the price of my product just because Exxon wants more money!

Angry Angry!!!!!!! Brown's Lost the PLOT, Again He's No Idea??

Even though the price of oil has gone down on the open market, we are still being ripped off by the government and to think that so many people voted them in on the "Honestly Clause". Something must be said and done as soon as possible and show the government that we (the public) should not be trifled with.
Most of us try and limit our usage of our cars to help with the environment so we do not need to be beaten with a stick.
Come on Mr Brown. gives us a break from more taxes..
its a big Rip Off
David Pountney July 3, 2008
I fully support your actions against the ridiculous price of petrol. With everything else going through the roof, I am finding it extremely difficult to ensure that I have enough fuel to function day to day and the quicker we can get rid of this damn greedy government the better as it is totally their fault for the price of petrol, no question.
The price of oil we know has risen but this could easily be offset by Brown and his cronies reducing the duty if only for a limited period until the price of oil falls but better for the country, reduce it for good as we are ripped of enough.
Remember, they are supposed to represent our views, thats why they were elected, we voted them in, (not me I must add), and we can vote them out twice as quick.
One comment I must have, fuel protests, brilliant, but do them all in the middle of London, bring the centre of the city to a stand still, stop the MP`s getting to parliament then it might hit home, as it is, it happens around the country and does not disrupt the people it should do so it doesn`t have maximum effect.

Just a couple of actual facts to make the angry brigade even angrier -
Petrol hit £1 a litre in 2000, it's now at say £1.20/litre - a rise of 2.5% a year, well under inflation and I suspect your wage rises.
Reducing tax on fuel would increase instability of petrol prices - it's the tax that has cushioned us from the worst of the oil price rises. Particularly in business, it is the inability to plan for your fixed costs which is he killer, not the actual price of the commodity. Reducing tax would make it a lot harder to plan for the varying price per barrel (you don't mention this when comparing us to the States do you?). There is a real argument for pegging the price of fuel to an inflation linked fixed rate and adjusting the tax as the price of oil fluctuates. Trouble is this is tantamount to nationalising the fuel supply and I doubt whether there'd be many takers for that approach here. Also the initial price would undoubtedly have to be more than it currently is to make the policy work over any decent time frame.
We all want to pay less for everything, food, services and fuel so we can have more money to spend on holidays, cigarettes and subscriptions to the Daily Mail - but the fact is the overall price of motoring is lower now than it ever has been. The economy is a balanced system, the conditions that have allowed this to be the case include the current rate of fuel tax.
I don't pretend everything in the Garden is rosy but I find these protests depressing and ill-conceived - it sounds to me as if you are dancing to someone else’s tune. Oil is running out and we need to reduce our dependence on it and you'd be better spending your time and effort addressing this.
Now... off to start my campaign to get Gordon Brown to do something about these rising sea levels.........
I am intrigued to see if this post gets any comments (apart from abuse that is !)

MOAN MOAN MOAN MOAN MOAN ......thats all you ever do in britain but noone stands up and gets counted its "im all right jack" attitude mostly and this plays into the hand of every govt. thats been in office in the last 20 yrs
there should be a vote of no confidence in this govt by the british people and it should be removed as soon as possible if this was a private firm and they were makeing these mess ups like this they would all be sacked !! for negligence or convicted!!!!
they were voted in by the people for the benifit of the people all they have done the last 10 yrs is screwed the very people that voted them in with there taxes and nanny state!!
the car owner has become the easist target to hit with petrol tax,car duty tax, speeding camera tax, toll road tax, and so many other taxes that make your head spin
something has got to burst soon as cant see us jolly public putting up with it much longer ........even the "im all right jack" crowd aswell will soon feel the pinch !!
oh and just cause there thinking of putting car tax duty up by 400% can you all make sure you ask for a below inflation rise in your wages for the next two years please says our brilliant chancelor he definitley aint my darling
Paul Mitchell June 17, 2008
we wouldnt mind paying the fuel prices if the goverment did away with the road tax.
i think it is about time that all motorists stood up for themselfs.
the fuel prices dont just hit motorists they hit the whole population due to the increase in the cost of living .its about time g.brown put a mask on to rob us.and did it with some dignity.

iam 150 percent backing this protest ,and i think that the average man and woman should to .i take my husband to and from work every day as he doesnt drive .that's 24 miles a day and with our joint income of only 15000 a year that is crippling us ,we get taxed for everything and the government are forcing our lorry drivers and businesses to fowled .the one thing i would like to say to the government charity begins at home ,and we put you there and we can take it away from you in the next election .so do the right thing start looking after your own people ,good luck with the strike lads and ladies
Dean Banfield June 13, 2008
Higher fuel prices will only drive overall livings costs higher, leading to higher inflation - a never ending spiral.
Why cant government act?
If they gave the subject any thought they would peg fuel costs to a specified price bracket, increasing and reducing the tax burden, keeping prices stable - similar to interest rates set by the BOE. Dont blame the BOE when the inflation target is not met....
Government prefer to seat back and enjoy the revenue stream - at the taxpayers expense!
