Back in March 2007 Gordon Brown, then chancellor, announced that he would be adding 2p extra duty to fuel and as an additional result collecting 0.35p extra VAT on every litre sold at the pumps.

In March, October seemed like a sensible time to implement it, after all on the 1st of October 2006 prices for unleaded had fallen from a summer high of 99.5p right down to 87.4p.

You may think I am a cynic, but I think he had calculated this date as about the least controversial date to hit the motorists with yet more tax based on last years prices.

2007 turned out to be different.

Should the government do a U turn and scrap the extra 2.35p tax on fuel because of unexpectedly high oil prices already hitting motorists hard?

October 2007 hasn't quite turned out to be everything that he hoped for. In fact this year, instead of falling from summer highs, the average price of fuel in the UK has stayed steady at around 95p and soon looks set to rise even further with the price of oil reaching record highs of around 80 dollars.

So as it has turned out October 2007 might be the worst time to hit us motorists, and at PetrolPrices.com we want to let the government know how we feel. We have prepared a vote on the right hand side and I hope you will join me in voting for a U-turn on this proposed hike in fuel duty.

With so many PetrolPrices.com users, hopefully the government will have no choice but to sit up and take notice.

Target one petrol suppler eg Shell and stop buying from them, once they are not selling petrol they will either reduce prices or will put pressure on the government to reduce the tax

What happend to all the truckers who protested so loudly and effectively?
Have their leaders been told to shut up? I do hope not!
As a taxi/private hire driver I'll feel this increase more than most but, as usual, I'll have to pass on the extra cost to my customers - as will every other type of business in the country! How to hike inflation in one easy move!! Perhaps that's why fuel gets hit so often - it's such an easy target! Ah, well! I managed to give up smoking (50 to 60 a day!!) so I look forward to the day when I can give up motoring!!

THERE IS NO WAY THE PEOPLE OF THE UK NEED ANOTHER PRICE HIKE ON PETROL

It should be no surprise that Mr Brown and his cronies are robbing from the motorists once again, they are an easy target.
A Prime Minister who has already robbed the pensioners of this country would have no qualms what-so-ever about thieving from the vunerable Motorist.
He should hang his head in shame.

This govenment and any other could afford to REDUCE petrol prices if they close our borders to imigration and stop the scroungers from other countries using GB for finacial gain. The D.H.SS would save billians and could move the savings to Transport and Road users.

Posted by Brian Richards, 27th September 2007 10:12pm

Transport is what made this country and others (USA) great. The freedom for people to travel also give people the need and the desire to own a nice house, a nice car, have nice holidays. People have a goal, an ambition to own nice things.

Once you have the car and have paid the annual cost of ownership then the fuel cost is very competative with public transport often cheaper so the only real saving is if you dont own a car.

What the government are saying is (if you belive the claptrap they spout) is that we sould all go back to the caveman days. Dont own a car, why not downgrade your house while your at it and hey, who needs carpets when straw will do?

With all the money you save you wont need the high wages so get an easier job or just pack up and do nothing because you can aford it.

We are living in a country run by people without qualifications, no common sense and no grasp of reality.

FUEL PRICES. ITS JUST THE TIP OF THE ICEBURG. THIS COUNTRY IS ROTTEN TO THE CORE.

We are taxed 33% then most things have VAT 17.5% added and our employers have to pay employee tax %15 and then theres NHI

Around %65 before you take into account so called green taxes, capital gains taxes and Mr brown destroying peoples pension accounts.

ROTTEN TO THE CORE! LETS START USING OUR VOTES PROPERLY READ THE PARTY MANIFESTO AND VOTE FOR THE PARTY WITH THE ONE YOU MOST AGREE WITH, IT'S THE ONLY THINK THEY WILL UNDERSTAND.

Posted by Mr Turton, 27th September 2007 10:12pm

Raising of the cost of fuel only increases the cost to the end user, its Joe public that end up paying more due to increased transportation costs this in turn leads to higher prices at all types of stores.

Why not review how the rail network is run and maintained, One side says use public transport, but in most cases one has only the option of a car or spend a great deal of time and also a large amount of money to travel by train, just to stand up the whole trip.

Its the top earners that need to pay more tax since they pollute far greater, this also should relate to company car tax system

Lets hope a fuel strike does not get into motion, and the MP's do listen to who voted them in.

Posted by J Sharma, 27th September 2007 10:12pm

I can't see any sign that people are reducing their usage or that the MPG is a significant factor when choosing a car or that they are reducing their speeds to get better economy so the price of fuel is obviously not high enough yet to change peoples behaviour.

Posted by J Elvin, 27th September 2007 10:12pm

Who is buying the oil in the first pleas. Its not the goverment, its the oil companys. It sould be them that set the prys and not the goverment. In South Africa fuil in costly, but it is not taxed as bad as it is in the UK,and that is a so calld therd world country. So come on MR Brown lower your tax take and let us all see you stop stealing ower hard ernd pay.

Posted by Alan, 27th September 2007 10:12pm

Why the hell do we the British put up with this complete and utter tosh of a government, some countries have went to war on such little things so why do we put up with it, we are all fecking sheep, just like the RBS advert on TV, it is not the oil companies fault it is the government tax that puts our fuel prices through the roof.

I SAY VOTE "NO" to this and if doesnt stop Mr.Darling then revolt agianst them, it is about time the government listened to the public.
They are all criminals anyway, just as bad as lawyers!!!

Posted by Kevin Gray, 27th September 2007 10:12pm

Gordon Brown has increased taxes on fuel since 1997 He does not own or drive a car so it costs him nothing yet we stupid motorist go on paying It is about time motorist of all political sides said enough is enough and vote clunking fist Gordon and his party out of office and any other political party that does not halt this TAX on motorists

Posted by Jack Ratcliffe, 27th September 2007 10:13pm

I suppose the government need the extra tax due to the fact that they have lost money because so many people have stopped smoking. They will have to get money off the unsuspecting public some way so why not tax the fuel again. Next the price of electricity and gas will go up!!!

Posted by Peter Brockie, 27th September 2007 10:13pm

I'm retired - the car is my independence - I've always done everything legally (Insurance , Road Tax etc.) and I am already financially challenged by the cost of motoring. This additional taxation is another cynical measure by a profligate government - they tell us that the economy is recovering and on the way up, then kick the public down again.
Enough is enough !

Posted by Fred Dickinson, 27th September 2007 10:13pm

It's all fine these people saying "walk some more, etc, etc", and to an extent I agree with them, but that doesn't change the fact that there are too many pen-pushers in the government and civil services because of all the redtape and they all need paying.

If we all cut our pleasure driving by 50%, which is probably quite realistic, then the government, would just raise the tax/duty on things even more.

They know they can get away with it, so they will. A bit like a child or an animal, they know their boundaries and they push you to them each time. As a country, we need to move the boundaries in on the government and tell them we're not happy, and protest about it. Petitions don't really get anywhere, apart from in the shredder of the receiver.

This Government has done nothing at all to help get people out of their cars by improving the transport infrastructure. I work in Runcorn which is around 6/7 miles from my home. To get their and back by car - without traffic takes around 15 minutes. It is not possible to do it with public transport. If the tax that they put on fuel helped to improve the transport system then I would accept it but it just seems to go into the general "coffers" of the Chancellor.

Outragous, how do they justify these increases.

Posted by Jacqueline Juliff, 27th September 2007 10:15pm

Not buying fuel won't work - we will still drive the same number of miles hence use the same amount of fuel...

Leaving your car at home for the day will work - use public transport, walk, take a day off. Just do not your car for a day, reduce teh number of miles travelled hence the amount of fuel bought. This will hit the treasury where it hurts most.

Posted by Steve Howard, 27th September 2007 10:15pm

The answer is to leave the country for good and live in another country where humans treated as humans. I have already left the UK and now living in a country which charges 20p for fuel and tax rate is only 10% on income. It's also safer, quieter, and run by a better government than these clowns in charge.

Tax is too high on petrol, we don't need another hike

Posted by Colin Ludriecus, 27th September 2007 10:17pm

It is bad enough for working folk - as a pensioner on a fixed income all of these additional taxes hit us harder still. How do we get rid of these pariahs? They should not be able to increase taxes that don't affect them directly to the same degree.

Posted by Jim Munro, 27th September 2007 10:17pm

There are two shell garages in Paisley, Scotland - one is selling diesel for 93.9p but it's opposite a Morrisons who are selling it for the same price, the other is two miles away and charging 97.9 for the same stuff.

This government see the hard-pressed motorist as easy meat. It's nothing to do with global warming as they are trying to con us into thinking but all to do with an easy way of raising more tax. Meanwhile the government reap all the VAT on the new suspension components we have to buy because the roads in Paisley must rank amongst the worst surfaces in the country. There's a new crossing in Paisley where they have painted the new lines over the existing potholes and some of the surface is down to the cobbles which once held tramlines - and still they tax us more and more!!

Posted by William R. Hutcheson, 27th September 2007 10:17pm

I think its totally disgusting that yet another tax hike on petrol is being introduced, as a community carer it is going to hit me hard, we are poory paid as it is, yet they expect us to do more and more and tax us more but dont put up our wages to compensate. If it wasnt for people like us then there wouldnt be any care for old people in their homes and they would be forced into homes or hospital for which there is no room. Dosnt figure.

Posted by David Locke, 27th September 2007 10:18pm

NO more tax. If train prices come down, I will be more than happy but right now its simply a joke to keep putting the prices up AS WELL AS the train prices >:(

Posted by Nick Watson, 27th September 2007 10:18pm

Don't they ever learn, you can push the British public so far before there is a backlash and the easiest way to do it is vote them out of their cushy jobs with their chaufered limosines.

Posted by John Whitehouse, 27th September 2007 10:18pm

I drive over 60 miles per day, just going to and from my daytime work. Public transport isn't on when I finish my night time work. I live 20 miles away from my 76 year old Mother. How the &%@# am I supposed to go about my business when I am being priced off the road.? My second job pays enough for a tank of petrol per week, plus some messages. I already work seven days per week, so what do the government suggest to improve my income to match my output on fuel?

Posted by Peter Mirtitsch, 27th September 2007 10:19pm

The only thing the labour government is successful at is pillaging the country through direct and indirect taxation.
Long gone are the days where people can travel without personal transport. And don't be fooled by the public transport ploy - whilst practically every other country in the world provide transport through nationally owned and operated transport systems, the labour government promotes privately owned publically subsidised transport.
Then the green issue. Well if they had followed the advice of engineers and scientists back in the 70's and invested in nuclear power instead of fossil fuelled power stations then they may have credibility but sadly that is not the case. And of course, we still see the MP's being driven around is fuel hungry vehicles but they don't have to worry because we pay for their transport - and not at cost but an inflated allowance.
No wonder the migration of intelligent people from this country is at its highest level!!!

Posted by T. Pierce, 27th September 2007 10:19pm

It seems like we are constantly being penalised for going to work. If you want to decrease the number of cars on the road then improve public transport. Public transport needs to be made more available, more reliable and more reasonably priced. Otherwise people will continue to use their cars but just get more annoyed and bitter about petrol prices - we need better alternatives not resons not to go to work.

The government no matter who seems to run it just charge all of our citizens unneccersarily, keep the charity at home instead of giving it to people abroad and the immigrants that were over run with. I for one am totally sick of it.

Posted by Simon Snowden, 27th September 2007 10:22pm

So fuel prices are to rise yet again!
One can assume by this that the Government needs more money. Why?
The extravagant handouts to support an out of hand immigration policy beggars belief, billions spent on quangoes and growing, the enormous cost of the political class to name a few. And who does the Government look to to help fund this? Yep, the good 'ol, say nothing, motorist.
Fuel prices, Gatso cameras, draconian parking charges and fines, yes, the motorist is an easy target.
If only we could introduce democracy into the system.

Posted by Brian Smith, 27th September 2007 10:22pm

I think it is appaling how motorists are treated in general and the extra tax is going to far!!!!!! I am only 19 and have a 1989 land rover 110 that I use for work and for play and I often use the 9 seats in it to stop people having to use there own vehicle and you cant tell me that by using my car is worse for the enviroment than two or three that would normaly be required. At 22mpg I use lots of diesel, and make a large donation to the taxman any way!! However I will just keep using my land rover untill it costs about £150 pounds for a tank of fuel (its closer than you all think!!!!!)

Rant over for now!!!!

Posted by David Bayliss, 27th September 2007 10:23pm

We all know that the government needs money.......... so do we.......... unfortunately, we can't get the government to give us money in the same way they take it from us.... !
If the government want us to use our cars/lorries less, they put the costs up.... so we use less..... so the government rake in less......
How about trying to convince the government that by reducing the tax, and overall price, MORE people will use the product, and although the unit profit/tax is smaller, the increased quantity sold increases the overall income.
By hiding the tax under the "green" brolly (reducing carbon emissions) the government is showing its contempt for the intelligence of the motoring public. By taxing the companies that make the inefficient petrol engines, and encouraging them to produce more "carbon friendly" engines by tax breaks, the companies would then be helping the government to increase their income, because consumers would buy the more efficient machine in preference to the high carbon machine. These more efficient machines would be used more, and thus the government tax receipts would be increased.
KEEP THE TAX AS IT IS........... TAX THE MANUFACTURERS....... we have no other options as consumers.....

Posted by Gerry Emson, 27th September 2007 10:24pm

Are we surprised by what governments do ...? Spin etc ... We ll all pay the price rise because we like our cars and wont give them up ... but we ll grumble and

what opposition have we got ?... They re all the same.

The last time there was a blockade at the refineries everyone queued to get the petrol and paid the increase .

People are apatheticwhen it comes to cars in this country

Posted by Susie Stephenson, 27th September 2007 10:24pm

I am amazed that we find the increase extraordinary! This shower have taxed every mortal thing that THEY can think of (please don't give them ideas). The improvements to nothing is very evident by not only their absence, but by the steady deterioration of every service. Our military have insufficient equipment, our hospitals insufficient staff, our education system is almost at the bottom of the pile, but at least MPs salaries, expenses and tax paid swans are covered. If you put all of our MPs into one room you would be pushed to find a halfwit. When will we ever learn.36VDCV

It is time to get rid of this lying, devious pile of trash for good. We will never see the tax we are paying on fuel put to do what it was intended to do. We need to get rid of the morons that have thrown almost everything we have all worked for away. Do not kid yourselves that voting against the tax alone
will make a difference, the only chance is to change the government that is milking us.

Posted by D Evans, 27th September 2007 10:27pm

I think it's scandalous to raise the price of fuel still further. It will have a knock on effect on the cost of living at a time when inflation is already higher than anticipated.

Posted by Barry Stoll, 27th September 2007 10:27pm

And the poor motorist is caned every time.

Posted by Mary Youngs, 27th September 2007 10:27pm

It's not on, why is it the motorist that gets targeted when it's what makes this country work, people commute using a vehicle that uses fuel from the pumps, either traveling to work, the shops our on holiday, weather thats using their own form of transport to public transport, the cost of fuel will cripple this country, people will stop doing anything here because it'll cost to much to travel anywhere, haulage companies are going bust because it cost to much in fuel to deliver the goods, holiday resorts like here in Blackpool suffer because it's cheaper to go abroad the travel in this country.
We all protested agaisnt the price of fuel going towards £1 or above with a fuel strike some years ago, so why are we letting the gouverment get away with it now, are we going to sit back & say, 'oh well, never mind, can't do anything about it', NO, WE ARE BRITISH, STAND UP FOR ARE RIGHTS, WE ARE TO SOFT, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT INSTEAD OF MOANING ABOUT IT.

Posted by Steven Bowen, 27th September 2007 10:28pm

Increasing fuel duty = increasing spending OVER AND ABOVE increase in inflation, sick of this government hitting middle england and crippling anyone who does anything with their lives ie work, own a business, manage a business etc and to add insult to injury give it to those who dont contribute to our economy!!! About time they helped industry become competitive and encourage employees to keep wage increases down by cutting taxation not increasing it. Year on year I am increasingly worse off by a significant amount!! And whatever they say, its not an environmental tax - there is significant evidence to prove that the environmental argument is rubbish and yet another excuse to increase revenue. Gordon Brown - I want to work and earn a living but you are making it increasingly not worth my while to do so!!!!

As usual the 'labour' government is 'punishing' those who do not have company cars, therefore pay for their OWN fuel, their OWN car tax and their OWN insurance, most people like me who own their own cars don't do it out of 'laziness' - I walk everywhere that is under 5 miles -when the journey is longer or I have things to transport I use my car, this government rewards the 'best off' and taxes the poor and struggling middle classes who don't qualify for any sort of benefits, those of us that have worked hard, saved and bought the necessary 'tools' (ie cars) for modern life are considered 'cash cows' by the government - I bet they don't pay for their petrol -it's probably a business 'expense'!

Posted by Sally Norton, 27th September 2007 10:29pm

Raising money is a great idea until you consider people like myself and my wife. My wife is a school teacher and could only get a job somewhere that is near inaccessible by public transport (45 mins by car, double that by public transport having to travel on crowded, rarely on time public transport in to Edinburgh, then back out to get to her school). It also costs a damn sight more than taking the car.
I service customers in various locations and the pitiful public transport we have just can't guarantee to get me there on time, I'd waste half of my company's time taking earlier trains/buses and spending twice as long travelling as I need to do just now. Belive me, I've tried. I'd rather 'let the train take the strain' than drive any day if it actually worked!
I'm sure public transport is great in large cities, but living in the Central belt of Scotland it's awful.

HOW ABOUT THE CARROT FIRST INSTEAD OF BEATING US ALL WITH A STICK?

What's wrong with investing some money in an integrated public transport system that works? Then I'd leave the car at home. Until then it's just not feasible and until I emigrate I suppose I'll need to let the robbers in charge fleece me!
What can we all do, easy, it's not stop buying petrol for a day, remember who's taxing us more than anyone else has ever and vote them out when they call their election. They know they can keep sticking the tax up because we've all got no choice. What happens when we can't afford it? It's not the beautiful pollution and congestion free society some people seem to think... it's unemployment because the cost of transport outweighs the money we're bringing in. Then see how much money goes in to government coffers!

Posted by Alan Paton, 27th September 2007 10:29pm

I understood that petrolprices.com was a way of informing people of prices available in an area, not a political round-robin. Comments about the price of fuel, yes, but general political comments, no! What is this? Somewhere to the right of UKIP? I don't like the increases, but tend to agree with Amanda Lightfoot. Well said! We've got to balance our own pockets with what we're passing on to the next generations.

Posted by Geoff Redfern, 27th September 2007 10:30pm

We hold the power here if we're prepared to use it. For example, if the vast majority of motorists decided to boycott one fuel supplier (just for example BP) for a week (or even longer) the effect would soon be felt.

I know that would be difficult in some rural areas and perhaps many don't care, or others would say it would put jobs at risk but it would be interesting to see the effect - even for just a week.

I think that most people see driving as a neccessity thanks to out of town supermarkets, and jobs less and less available locally unless you are lucky enough to work from home. The road tax is already creeping up, and the fuel is ridiculous with no encouragement from the government to switch to alternative fuels.
And to me the salt in the wound is as if they aren't charging enough every garage cashier sits behind a huge display of tobacco and cigarettes which the government further benefits from. It's got worse from the days when you were able to bypass the shops and the temptations including alcohol and nicotine and pay them at the pump.
It is definetly a good time in my opinion to make a stand against additional taxing, it is all very worrying!

Posted by Paul Jeffres, 27th September 2007 10:31pm

it seems funny to me that a few years ago we were fighting against the raise of fuel from the 0.70 to the pound, this as expected did the trick for a short period, but as time went on fuel raised to the pound anyway, but bit by bit, and have you noticed that once upon a time diesel was so much cheaper than petrol, so what happened there then, diesel is now more expensive that petrol in a lot of cases.
but the most interesting of all is that petrol and diesel, is in fact a waste product of crude oil, that's right its the cr*p that left over, but still it would seem to be the most profitable. Seems i need a different job, selling cr*p!!!!!.
if the government would like to put another 1 percent on my mortgage, and another 2.5 pence on my fuel, oh and don't forget the extra on the vat and tax let alone the lack of wage rises, then perhaps i will go bankrupt, i know i can go into rented accommodation, go on the dole and have all the expenses paid for me. WHY WONT THE GOVERNMENT LISTLE TO THE VOTING PUBLIC INDSTEAD OF DOING WHAT THEY WANT AND MAKING IT MORE DIFFICULT FOR THE COMMON MAN TO GET TO WORK............

They very sadly don't care or listen. It happened in Scotland as the Scottish Labour leader said just the other day. Lets hit them where it hurts and remove them from their little ego ivory castles. Then let them join the rest of us who are now dependant on cars, with really poor public transport and not being able to afford it all.

If I didn't use my car I couldn't get to work. We live in the country and there is no other transport to where I work. Also my poor 16 year old son has to leave home at 7am and doesn't get home until 7 pm from college as there are only 2 buses a day there. It is very unfair to add more tax to petrol - it means higher food prices and it penalises those of us who have no other means of transport.

Well, All I can say is "Thanks to all the prats that voted for Labour", and thanks Mr. Brown for well over 100 stealth taxes you have slipped past us all. The only way this Government will realise what the man in the street has to pay out of their wages every week, is for ALL MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT to be put onto the average National Wage, and see if, without all their Perks taken away, how they manage to live!!
I am a 66yrs Pensioner, how would they like to live on £100.00 per week?.

Yet mor taxes on top of taxes on top of taxes. This is nothing to do with Green issues it is simply about raising revenue.

Its time tha the government stops and takes a look - visit railway stations at rush hour to see teh commuters that are turned away when the train they intended to catch are already full.

The trains themselves are so old that they belch out the fumes but these companies have to make a profit and they do this by keeping old trains running.

The country is on its knees as borrowing reaches yet another high.

SO all this tax will do Mr Brown (or Alistair Darling) is force the poor to borrow more and struggle for their survival yet again.

Once again another kick in the pants from the Tax mad government !! No wonder more and more people are falling into poverty, why doesn't our wonderful MP's take a cut in their wages... that should free up plenty of money !

One day the government in this country will push the people to far - woe betide them (whosoever is in power at that time), Yet again they are taxing the motorist, It is totally wrong that the majority of the cost of a litre of fuel is down to a tax, the US pay a lot less for fuel than UK motorist, what does the chancellor do with it? its certainly not being spent on upkeep of the roads, no it is use by robbing Peter to pay Paul. They should take a look back in history, to people like the Sheriff of Nottingham, he bit off more than he could chew!!!!. Government, you have been warrned before, the last time it was only a taste of things to come, whilst i do not advocate violence of any kind, mark my words it will get very ugly before long and someone may well get hurt in the process. STOP RIPPING OFF THE MOTORIST !

Just how much more tax, in any form, can we all take!

I'm in England for 2 years - enough to discover that petrol is more expensive than in other european countries. 2p more is 2p too much.
