Back in March 2007 Gordon Brown, then chancellor, announced that he would be adding 2p extra duty to fuel and as an additional result collecting 0.35p extra VAT on every litre sold at the pumps.

In March, October seemed like a sensible time to implement it, after all on the 1st of October 2006 prices for unleaded had fallen from a summer high of 99.5p right down to 87.4p.

You may think I am a cynic, but I think he had calculated this date as about the least controversial date to hit the motorists with yet more tax based on last years prices.

2007 turned out to be different.

Should the government do a U turn and scrap the extra 2.35p tax on fuel because of unexpectedly high oil prices already hitting motorists hard?

October 2007 hasn't quite turned out to be everything that he hoped for. In fact this year, instead of falling from summer highs, the average price of fuel in the UK has stayed steady at around 95p and soon looks set to rise even further with the price of oil reaching record highs of around 80 dollars.

So as it has turned out October 2007 might be the worst time to hit us motorists, and at PetrolPrices.com we want to let the government know how we feel. We have prepared a vote on the right hand side and I hope you will join me in voting for a U-turn on this proposed hike in fuel duty.

With so many PetrolPrices.com users, hopefully the government will have no choice but to sit up and take notice.

It,s time the fat cats licking the cream redused the taxes on our road fuels

Posted by Ian Harrison, 16th April 2008 9:35pm

Fuel for transport has gone up again, to £109.9 for unlead, and 118.9 for diesel, which means all goods will increase in price.

Posted by Jack Foster., 20th April 2008 8:18pm

Price of Unlead has risen again by .01pence a Litre, and if the price keeps rising, by the time October arrives when the tax on fuel is due to rise again, people on low incomes will not be able to afford to use their cars.

Posted by Jack Foster., 24th April 2008 9:43pm

We will never win against the government, it's about time we went after the big chains that are making millions off our back. Boucot the likes of Tesco/Asda/Morrison etc for one week and they will bring the petrol prices down.someone out there must be able to arrange something like this.
I know the major garages like Esso/Shell make millions but more often than not the garages are franshises so we don't want to hit them.

Posted by Caroline Lewis, 25th April 2008 10:20pm

i just think that the increase in petrol along with other big increases in food etc will put the nail in the coffin for labour at the next election.
which can't be bad!

Posted by Michelle Davis, 27th April 2008 12:08am

is the government buying fuel from the EU before tax or after tax.
if i paid tax for a ship load in france .would i be alrigh having paid tax to selll it in this country. being EU.

Posted by Maxie Glass, 29th April 2008 7:07pm

enough is a enough!! mr brown should surley be thinking of reduesing HIGH!!! tax all ready on our faul in the uk instead of adding to the problems.
one would think as prime minster his main priorioty would be to keep this country running!!?? in light of our already struggling economy !!!

it would apear the only way forward is proteats!! and fual blockades!!
and sooner rather than later poeple!!!

Posted by Mr Robert Wareham, 1st May 2008 9:45pm

I see a lot of comments, but where are the organisers for us to take some action, keeping it legal to either boycott a company or not using our cars for a week or so to hit both government and suppliers.

Posted by Eddiey Conroy, 12th May 2008 12:32pm

it is time to make a stand against the Governments tax on fuel we as a nation dont like protest or complaining but it is time to start

Posted by Peter Magor, 17th May 2008 10:46am

How are they getting away with these increases? I could half understand if we had a decent public transport but we dont. When are the government going to realise that these ridiculous petrol prices are ruining buisinesses. I wouldn't mind but its not exactly the only thing that is too expensive in this country. When will it all stop!

Posted by Craig Bray, 18th May 2008 5:47pm

oh how i love being taxed even more on fuel so gordon brown can have a second home

Posted by Glenn Jefferson, 18th May 2008 7:51pm

consider how much esso and bp control the fuel market if we boycott the big two then that will put them under pressure to reduce prices, also the honrable gentlemen of westminster claim thier road tax petrol expense mot costs service costs so how do they feel the pinch

Posted by Robert Laurie, 27th May 2008 7:35am

My wife got a diesel car 6 months ago even though diesel costs more, she was told it was better for the global warming, so what's this about the environment if diesel dos less damage shouldn't it be cheaper.

Posted by Keith John Bass, 27th May 2008 10:23am

THEY ARE BRINGING THE COUNTRY TO ITS KNEES WITH THE COST OF THEIR FUEL INCREASES, ITS BLOOD MONEY FOR THE RICH AGAIN. THIS HAS TO BE REDUCED

Posted by Tommy D, 27th May 2008 9:57pm

The Unions should do more, by putting pressure on this Government to reduce the cost of fuel, by lowering the tax. If the Government do not lower the tax, then the Unions should call for a all out strike. This Government excuse of the cost fuel, is due to the high price of oil, then why is a litre of Unleaded fuel cheaper in the European countries if that was the case.

Posted by Jack Foster., 27th May 2008 10:21pm

why don't we just sign our total incomes to the government, then get vouchers back for our needs, at least they will have all the monies in one go.

Posted by Malcolm Brian Walker, 28th May 2008 12:29pm

Petrol prices are crazy im a student how can i possibly afford it?

Posted by Lloyd Rixon, 29th May 2008 12:08pm

The cost of fuel for a Litre of Unleaded petrol, has increased overnight where I live. The price has increased by Three Pence in Two days, and carry on at this rate, it will be One Pound Twenty a Litre by the end of next week, or sooner.
Every driver should record how many miles they travel to work and back, and how many Litres of Fuel is used, and a seperate record of the same, when they have to go shopping. They should then enter the details on their Income Tax return, so that the amount can be claim from the tax that has to be paid.
If the all of the Members' of the Parliaments can claim, then all of the General Public who drive, should be able to claim.

Posted by Jack Foster., 29th May 2008 10:23pm

You are paying a lot more then we are here in Australia. Locally in the bush we are paying $1.60 a litre. Not like you we have to travel 55 KM each way to go shopping. 25 KM each way to visit a Doctor or Chemist. We do use bigger cars then in UK I admit this We need then where we live.
We can not blame our current Government for this or the previous one either.
Then again LABOR Governments always add to taxes and they never take them off.
It's those bloody ARABS holding back supply. I always said Moses turned the wrong way when he crossed the RED SEA all those years ago. I would sooner have the Jews running this business then the Arabs.

Posted by Kevin Bishop, 30th May 2008 10:58am

When is the motorist finally going to realise the true influence it could have in combating this blatant, obscene legalised extortion. Boycott the most expensive oil companies in your area and dont be affraid to point out to other motorist garages that may cheaper just along the road.

Tell people even it they are just about to turn onto the forecourt of one these rip off companies.

I was recently asked by my local police if I had been a recent victim off crime..... I felt compelled to answer yes.... every time I go to fill my car up with fuel.

The people of France would not put up with this.....

Posted by Peter Wheaton, 4th June 2008 7:51pm

PS......... and what are the so called motoring organisations like the AA & RAC doing to help us in our struggle to stay mobile.... They dont seem to be making to much noise do they?

Posted by Peter Wheaton, 4th June 2008 8:28pm

Reply to 9397. What are the AA and the RAC doing to help us, you ask. What are the Trade Unions doing to help their members? This tax on fuel for transport affects everyone, and the Unions could put pressure on this Government to cut the tax.

Posted by Jack Foster., 4th June 2008 10:14pm

ONCE AGAIN WE FIND OUR SELVES BEING HIT BY HIDDEN TAX,S AMERICA PAYS LESS FOR FUEL BUT PAYS THE SAME FOR A BARREL OF OIL HOW CAN THIS BE ITS TIME THE BRITISH PEOPLE WOKE UP AND SAID ENOUGH IS A ENOUGH £5.71 FOR A GALLON OF DIESEL IS EXTORSIOATE YES £5.71 A GALLON WAKE UP BRITAIN AND SMELL THE COFFEE I WOULD NT MIND PAYING 2$ FOR AGALLON WHERES THE JUSTICE IN THAT ie$2 TOTHE POUND SMOKERS HAVE BEEN HIT NOW LET HIT THE MOTORIST THE NEXT TAX WELL GET IS TALKING WHERE HAS FREEDOM OF SPEECHE GONE WHAT AS HAPPENED TO THIS ONCE GREAT COUNTRY OF OURS!

Posted by Mr Ronald Stephen Tame 66 Foden Road Birmingham, 9th June 2008 2:43pm

Apart of the cost of fuel for transport, wait until next year, when the vehicle tax goes up, and rises again in Twenty Ten. This Government has given Ten Million Pounds to Afghanistan, to add to the Five Million that it has already been given, so you now know where the tax money goes.

Posted by Jack Foster., 12th June 2008 11:05am

The price at my local filling station has risen to One Pound, Twenty Pence for Unleaded, and One Pound, Thirty Two Pence for Diesel.

Posted by Jack Foster., 25th June 2008 8:29pm

It is our hands to take action as many have suggestedby by not using our cars as a group for a limited time or indeed as has recently been suggested a day of boycott the pumps (this hits tax revenue) or boycotting one of the big suppliers.
This is all legal and hurts nobody but the tax revenue and the supliers who supposidly do not make any money from fuel. Most wonderful and charitable businesses. I for one will join any group who does this in my area.

Posted by Eddiey Conroy, 26th June 2008 4:07pm

Three months from now the fuel for transport will rise by Two pence a Litre, unless the Chancellor cancel the Tax rise by then.

Posted by Jack Foster., 1st July 2008 5:24pm

This Government need more money in taxation to fund the usual... LABOUR....
SPEND...SPEND...SPEND on totally pointless projects and to fund the lavish lifestyle MP's seem to have.

Ask yourself, how often do you drive along a quiet city street, in the evening - not speeding, and get stopped at every single set of lights on the journey on a straight road?? THEN have to sit and wait for a car to approach the crossing junction.

MULTIPLY that fuel for sitting and then getting back up to speed x thousands of roads x 30+ million cars on the road a day.....

Thats a lot of extra revenue.

FINALLY, DID YOU KNOW THE LABOUR GOVERNMENT PAY COUNCILS A BONUS FOR EVERY SET OF TRAFFIC LIGHTS THEY INSTALL!!!!

ENVIRONMENTALLY CRIMINAL

The latest news is that the Chancellor of the Exchequer, has postpond the 2p rise in fuel duty due in October, and will review this in Six months time.

Posted by Jack Foster., 16th July 2008 11:47am

With the supermarkets, and the various petrol companies, lowering the price of fuel for transport, how long will it be, before the Chancellor imposes the Two pence tax increase, that he postponed?

Posted by Jack Foster., 24th July 2008 10:48am

The price of Unleaded fuel is now 114 pence a Litre where I live, and someone told me that the price is 111 pence a Litre, at a filling station in Watford.

Posted by Jack Foster., 8th August 2008 10:23pm

I am still waiting for some sort of group to get together to take some action, (legal) such as not using our cars for a limited period of time or boycotting one of the main suppliers. If it is done this way, revenue lost cannot be recovered and the point will have been made. Incidently I hear the opposition making a lot of noises, but not coming forward with any proposals as to how they intend to remedy what this government has done with regard to stealth taxes of which fuel is only one. Remember fuel is reasonably cheap, it is the taxes that make it expensive.

Posted by Eddiey Conroy, 21st August 2008 12:30pm

Fuel for transport is on the rise again, with my local filling raising the price to £1.1129p, for Unlead petrol.

Posted by Jack Foster., 5th September 2008 7:25pm

Will the price of fuel at the pumps fall, as a result of the lower price of oil annouced today.

Posted by Jack Foster., 16th September 2008 4:07pm

The price of Unleaded petrol went down today, at my local filling station, by Three pence to £1.109.

Posted by Jack Foster., 20th September 2008 9:33pm

Late news tonight is that the price of future crude oil has risen by 22%, to $126.50 a barrel. This means that the price of petrol will increase next month, so fill your car now, before it increases.

Posted by Jack Foster., 22nd September 2008 9:50pm

The price for unleaded fuel at my local filling station is now £1.069 Litre.

Posted by Jack Foster., 12th October 2008 9:28pm

The price at a filling station, about a mile from where I live, is now £1.029 for a Litre of Unleaded petrol, and someone told me that it was .99p, for a Litre of Unleaded, at a filling station in Watford.

Posted by Jack Foster., 21st October 2008 1:12pm

The price at a filling station near me, for Unlead petrol is now £0.969 Litre, but I do not think that this price will last for long, as there is now a cut in oil production.

Posted by Jack Foster., 27th October 2008 11:07am

The price for Unleaded petrol, at my local fillng station, is now £0.949p a Litre.

Posted by Jack Foster., 7th November 2008 8:30pm

The cost of a Litre of Unleaded petrol at my local filling ststion is now .909 pence. The Treasury has annouced that there will be a .02 pence increase on a Litre of petrol, from the First of December 2008.
The treasury also annouced that there will be an increase of 1.84 pence on a Litre of petrol, from the First of April 2009, and a futher increase of 0.5 pence from the First of April 2010.

Posted by Jack Foster., 25th November 2008 8:13pm

The Chancellor cut VAT on petrol etc., put then increased the tax, so why did bother in the First place, when it did not make any diffrence to the price.

Posted by Jack Foster., 2nd December 2008 7:51pm

The price for a Litre of Unleaded petrol, is now .869 pence, at my local filling station.
The chairman of OPEC, has stated that the tax on fuel for transport in the UK, is to high, but I doubt that this Government would lower the tax.

I wish A Merry Christmas, and A Happy New Year to all.

Posted by Jack Foster., 24th December 2008 9:43pm

The price of Unleaded fuel, is now .839 pence, at my local filling station today.

Posted by Jack Foster., 1st January 2009 4:59pm

As I drove pass a local filling station yesterday evening, I noticed that the price of a Litre of Unleaded petrol had risen by .01 pence, so fuel for transport is on the rise again.

Posted by Jack Foster., 9th January 2009 1:17pm

Another increase in the cost of a Litre of Unleaded petrol, at my local filling station yesterday, an increase of .01 pence, to .859 pence.

Posted by Jack Foster., 13th July 2009 9:46pm

The price for a Litre of Unleaded petrol is still £1.039, where I live, but do not forget that in Twenty days time from now, the cost will rise again when the increase in fuel duty is added.

Posted by Jack Foster., 12th August 2009 11:19am

We are still being ripped off big time by this vile greed fueled government. They see us as an easy target to line their pockets. Direct action needs to be taken as this is the only thing they take any notice of. Hit them where it hurts, in their pockets just like they do to us. play them at their own game is the only way to get a reduction in the extortionate tax they impose on fuel. Evil dictatorship.

Posted by C Evans, 15th August 2009 7:01am

The cost of a Litre of Unleaded fuel, has risen by One pence, to £1.049, where I live. The question is, after the new fuel duty is added, from the First September, what will it cost for a Litre of Unleaded?

Posted by Jack Foster., 17th August 2009 9:24pm

The cost of a Litre of Unleaded petrol went up again today, to £1.059. Carry on at this rate, it will be £1.119, or more, for a Litre of Unleaded, by the time the Tax on Fuel comes into effect.

Posted by Jack Foster., 18th August 2009 9:56pm

The cost of fuel for transport ncreased this week, due to the rise in the fuel duty, to £1.079 a Litre. The workers at the oil refineries, are considering going on strike, because of cheap labour being empolyed from the EU, which will lead to fuel, and power shortages.

Posted by Jack Foster., 4th September 2009 11:07am

Fuel for transport is back to £1.079 a Litre, and will rise again, when the VAT goes up in January.

Posted by Jack Foster., 23rd October 2009 9:14pm

If we got together and boycotted one particular petrol provider for one week we would have an effect on petrol prices, lets do it.......
