Back in March 2007 Gordon Brown, then chancellor, announced that he would be adding 2p extra duty to fuel and as an additional result collecting 0.35p extra VAT on every litre sold at the pumps.

In March, October seemed like a sensible time to implement it, after all on the 1st of October 2006 prices for unleaded had fallen from a summer high of 99.5p right down to 87.4p.

You may think I am a cynic, but I think he had calculated this date as about the least controversial date to hit the motorists with yet more tax based on last years prices.

2007 turned out to be different.

Should the government do a U turn and scrap the extra 2.35p tax on fuel because of unexpectedly high oil prices already hitting motorists hard?

October 2007 hasn't quite turned out to be everything that he hoped for. In fact this year, instead of falling from summer highs, the average price of fuel in the UK has stayed steady at around 95p and soon looks set to rise even further with the price of oil reaching record highs of around 80 dollars.

So as it has turned out October 2007 might be the worst time to hit us motorists, and at PetrolPrices.com we want to let the government know how we feel. We have prepared a vote on the right hand side and I hope you will join me in voting for a U-turn on this proposed hike in fuel duty.

With so many PetrolPrices.com users, hopefully the government will have no choice but to sit up and take notice.

As a father of a young family we have had to move quite a distance to find afforable housing. Rising petrol prices just adds insult to injurry. Both my wife and I are teachers, work all hours but see nothing of our monthly wage due to high mortage repayments, limited help with childcare and running a house and car. What's the point. We both come from working class backgrounds but have been completely ignored by the current administration. The proposed increases are yet another kick in the teeth to the average, hard working family who want to improve their quality of life. I will never vote for labour again and due to the three party system will therefore probably never vote again. Sad in many ways.

Instead of penalising law abiding motorists, the Government should ensure harsh penalties (in cash and /or cars) for those who flout the law in holding current insurance and tax etc.

This society is becoming a penalised society for all (spped cameras a case in point) whereas the villians should be penalised and made to pay)

Posted by J.tyrrell, 27th September 2007 7:07pm

I am a little confussed by our leaders. Firstly they wanted every body to go over to diesel because of the better MPG, then diesel was out because of the pollution. But every time they change their minds they put the cost up to sway us away from one fuel to other, it keeps changing so nobody remembers what the original price was. some useless info for you -
Dec 01 U/L was 68.9 per ltr
Dec 03 U/L was 73.9 per ltr
Sept 04 U/L was 79.9 per ltr
Oct 07 it will break the £1 per ltr

It must be time for blockades again!!!
when will it stop?
if they want to save money restrict the immergation like other countries.

There is little evidence that tax alone will change behavior. This Government needs to raise a considerable amount of money to pay for the ill advised war in Iraq. The additional tax will not be spent improving services.
The motorist is an easy target and the excuse of global warming can be used.
It is inevitable that the price of most other goods will rise as a result of the extra cost of fuel.
Unfortunately I do not trust any of the political parties but we could start by not voting for this Government whenever the election is called.

I think its time that all driver either proffesional like myself or commuter/ lesuire driver should actually stop driving for a couple days, remember every thing you need comes by road at sometime so imagine what would happen if there was no deliveries the country would come to stop its the only way to make the government sit up and take notice also if as i said the commuter driver refused to drive the public transport infrastructure would not be able to cope so lets go for it

Posted by Stephen Bray, 27th September 2007 7:08pm

Many people have to use the car because of where they live and the days they need to travel therefore it is unfair punishing them. If public transport was more frequent and cheaper maybe fewer people would use it.

Posted by Sandie Perrins, 27th September 2007 7:09pm

Put up the Road Tax Duty on high consumption vehicles and do not take extra tax from people who can barely afford to run vehicles which are essential for the day to day life of working class people in the 21st century.

If this government wants another term in office, it had better start to do something for the man in the streeet. Labour are a disgrace. Any increase in fuel levy will increase the cost of living and will increase inflation. The only winner! The Bank of England directors and their greedy countrerparts in other banks. The losers US. Fule is too expensive now. A few years ago we were conned into using diesel engines, the price of diesel was lowwer than petrol, now we all bought diesel powered cars, diesel is increased so it now costs more than petrol.

Mr Brown, think of us for a change, of go back to Scotland and leave us alone.

Posted by Barry R Crane, 27th September 2007 7:11pm

Why not get the public transport system working before taxing me out of my car?

Will there be tax relief for road haulage and farmers or is there a plan to bring the whole economy to halt?

Posted by Chris Ball, 27th September 2007 7:11pm

why should we pay extra, we are paying too much as it is ,so cant the lorrys do a go slow again round the m25??

Posted by Chris, 27th September 2007 7:11pm

once again we are being fleeced by our government in order to raise more revenue.continually this government brings in taxes disguised as either health and safety or green policies or our new enemy global warming.1% of co2 emissions is caused by humans so that means 99% is natural. destoying rainforests over the last 30 years has no effect there then and who cares because its all about making a big buck and screw the aftermath. greed is what is killing or country from the day margaret thatcher (the moo) said greed is good.all in the name of economy. one day everyone will wake up and believe what they see .

Posted by David Russell, 27th September 2007 7:12pm

I think this goverment will do just as they please and keep making us pay. They NEVER listen to the motorist who in most part keep the money comming into the coffers. They will end up killing the 'Golden Goose' and tax everyone on some other overtaxed goods (Like spirits and wine) or even introduce a water tax!!!!!

I retired in 1990 and since that date have received pension increases in line with government cost of living calculations. In real terms this means that my income today is worth very much less than it was in 1990 and declines every year.
At 76,the last thing I need is another increase in fuel tax. This, together with the ever increasing parking charges in the city of Derby, where I have the misfortune to live,is making it more difficult to justify my weekly shopping trip to the City.
I would be happy to support any proposed boycott on petrol purchases --just let me know what the concensus of opinion is.!

Posted by J.a.bowker, 27th September 2007 7:12pm

I'd pray for the snap election except Cam and Ming are both attracted to bashing taxpayers too. Maybe we need to look to fringe parties like the UKIP to help us out. After all, if the UKIP held the balance of power we might just get the promised referendum and if we left the EU maybe we can say goodbye to VAT.

Posted by Frank Routledge, 27th September 2007 7:12pm

I would think that with mortgage rates at a high and people having to use credit to pay bill!. having a petrol price rise is just what we all need so i just goes to show that great britain is once again showing the world it is possable to get blood out of a stone, what a great conuntry.

Posted by Paul Davies, 27th September 2007 7:12pm

will this goverment not stop until it has bankrupted every small company in the country
do they not realise we pass on the extra cost to our customers they vote with there feet and use someone else
perhaps we should all vote with our feet and get rid all the scots irish and welsh running england
have you heard tony blair and gordon brown have been given a secret nobel prize for peace because they are allowing britain to be invaded without a shot fired by any other country the last time we had a threat of this nature chamberlain came back waiving a piece of paper

Here we go again with this tax and spend lot. Roll on the election and we can get these parasites off our back. This rise will affect everything and everyone don't these Labour luvvies have any sense at all.

Posted by B.carroll., 27th September 2007 7:13pm

Go Ahead - make my day - hike the taxes and perhaps the millions of drivers and companies that this will affect will say enough is enough at the next available opportunity and dump this bunch of political cowboys at the next election. Strange isn't it - the Tories transform the nation and get dumped after 17 years because everyone had had enough - not because Labour had anything to offer - we've had 11 years of this mob and yet they continue to get away with much more than the Tories ever did! When will this country learn!

The motorist has no option but pay increases because of the governments failure to support o true network of integrated transport. As I was born early I can remember the ease and low cost of using public transport but with rationalization and de-regulation of rail and bus transport the alternatives are walk, cycle or become unemployed. Not many people live over the shop for work, I work to live not live to work and pay tax. Everything is taxed and unfortunately it never goes down. So it helps to be able to earn money to give nearly half of it back in the various taxes Do not break the camels back.

Sick to death of the rip-off taxes used to bolster inefficient public bodies.

Posted by G Gaffney, 27th September 2007 7:15pm

I am fed up with hearing people referring to cars as a luxury. I and many others live in rural areas and without a car we would live like most people did in the dark ages, living on what can be grown in the garden and rarely leaving the villages.

Posted by Eddy Mcconnell, 27th September 2007 7:17pm

Mr Brown may have the country's best interests at heart and i personally wish him well. I can also see the arguement for higher taxes on those things that harm the environment. But enough is enough, your right motorists get shafted right, left and centre, especially on petrol prices, anything over 80p a litre is a joke. i think another petrol strike may be in order. We need a country run for the people, by the people!

On another note has anyone else noticed that Tesco petrol lasts a lot less than that of morissons and jet? every little helps? My a**e!!!

Posted by James Mckay, 27th September 2007 7:17pm

Reduce MPs Expenses-reduce 2nd home mortgage payments to MPs and finally remember we all have a vote Mr Brown and we should use it at the next election.

Posted by George V Kelsall, 27th September 2007 7:17pm

I am already paying 16p per litre compared to my family in Glasgow. Another increase is just plain crazy!

Posted by Jack Macleod, 27th September 2007 7:18pm

"if companies like Tesco can offer 5p off a litre if you spend £50 instore it shows there is room for the price to come down"
They can only do this as There are already overcharging us for goods they sell. One week they was doing dish washer powered for £2.00 and the next week they had put it upto £2.50 but it was buy one get one free. So if they only have to slap on 50p to cover there costs just think about how much they make before the bogof offer. and the price stayed the same after the offer ened.....And yes i did contact them about it and got fobbed off.

Posted by Patrick, 27th September 2007 7:19pm

Posted by Joseph Ronald Walker, 27th September 2007 7:19pm

The motorist is always seen as a soft touch by the Chancellor. mind you as individuals we do not protest enough - yes we complain but we never vote against the government at the Elections so perhaps we are our own biggest enemies. You have my vote against the hike in TAX. Perhaps we need another formal petition to Downing Street to make them sit up and taske note of the average British motorist

Posted by Steve Williams, 27th September 2007 7:20pm

I AM OUTRAGED!

WHERE ARE THE FUEL PROTESTERS?

WE NEED THEM BACK NOW!!!!!!

It worked before, it'll work again.

I used to do 50,000 miles a year and I was hit by the effects of the last strike, BUT I COPED!
I halved my fuel consumption by being paranoid about running low and no doubt halved my CO2 emmisions for that period. (so i helped the environment too!!!)
I was grateful for the guys blockading the depots and garages because despite the hassles of the time, IT WAS WORTH IT!!

I am disgusted by the way the motorist is PUNISHED, just look now at the bullying tactics the police use to get you to own up to who was driving at the time of a speeding ticket! What they're saying is "own up or you'll get points and fined".
(does that work for other crimes?????) why not just get the "owner" down the station and use a "phone book" or better yet a BLACK MARIA!

You guys are right, Gordon brown was counting on a low price so he could "hide" the increase (how's the saying go? "you were happy to pay 99p in the summer so why not increase it now from 95p?) but Gordon, it's still 99p. . . . . . . . . .

I know people think not buying from the "big two" or not buying on a Friday would work but common sense please people, if you don't fill up on a friday, you'll just need to fill up on a Saturday. The oil companies don't care which day you buy your fuel on and as for not buying from the "big Two", where do you think the supermarkets buy their fuel from? it all comes from the same place. In our case in the SW, it's all coming from Avonmouth so the only way to win is to cripple them like before.

Blockade anyone? who's with me?

Motorists are getting hammered every way

Posted by Michael Sheldon, 27th September 2007 7:22pm

Urban motorists who have the option of good public transport may well decide not to use cars anymore if it becomes too expensive. Those of us in rural areas with poor or non-existent public transport will not have that luxury. We motorists already contribute a huge amount to the Exchequer. This is not a tax based on ability to pay - it' s just a dead easy target. Additionally, the Oil companies are making outrageous profits - how on earth can they get away with it?

Posted by Susan Allan, 27th September 2007 7:23pm

A rise in fuel? That's another brilliant Idea, from a government that is so in step with reality. Lets screw the nation down a bit more, after all, what's a few pence to joe public?
They have got to have a few extra quid after giving up smoking, a couple of pence is nothing. They wont really miss such a paltry amount at all, and the good thing is, that it wont affect us at all, (us, the government) our expenses are paid by the same Joe's that put us in Power. So it must be all right aint it?
After all, Joe public hardly raised an eyebrow when those nasty Arabs kept raising the oil prices to the present all time high.
No, I think we the government are being very reasonable in our minuscule tax increase, we could have gone for a lot more, after all, it's not as if Joe P. could do anything about it could he? I mean he's not likely to turn to the Liberal, neither will he turn conservative, they are too far behind us Labour, especially with our Gord's expertise in the Screw--- business. Mind you It did occur to me that Joe might have had a bit more to say when our Gord took the helm, I mean he did slot in very nicely, no opposition, no election, just shows how popular we must be, and how trustful we must appear. It's a good thing that Joe P. is a bit dim though, can you imagine what he could be capable of, if he realised how much money we have been making, on the Vat alone, since the Arabs have been jacking their prices up? That's without the 80% tax that we make on the increase anyway? I just Hope he does not take a leaf out of our very good and law abiding, European Frog neighbours Can you imagine what would happen if he and his mates started blocking depots, refinery transport and things, and even the ports and ferries.
Ports and Ferries might be particularly bad as it might stop our illegal migrants.
Who would we give all this extra money to?

Posted by Rbert Mason, 27th September 2007 7:23pm

If the Chancellor told us exactly what the extra tax was to be used rather than it being absorbed into the general coffers to make up for present government mismanagement projects then it may be acceptable.
Hopefully Mr Cameron will be in power soon and the new chancellor will be saying to Alister "move over Darling" !

Posted by Malcolm Lloyd, 27th September 2007 7:25pm

It is long overdue for the government to stop basing our economy on revenues derived from taxation which invariably hits the working man the hardest.Other countries have based their economies using lower taxation and find their monies through other means. It is about time we did the same.

Posted by Peter John Nowlan, 27th September 2007 7:26pm

I will seriously think about not working anymore and let the state keep me, if fuel goes up any higher in price i will probably not be able to afford to go to work. I cannot get a bus or train, too far to cycle and wont ride motorbike because there are too many European drivers who cant read signs or care about other peoples lives. If only every motorist could vote the same way......we would then have a voice.

Posted by Paul Howard, 27th September 2007 7:26pm

I suppose they need the extra revenue from all the hard working people to pay for all the scroungers / spongers and system abusers in the country.
Just like Mr Blair, Mr Brown will not listen to the British people, just the politically correct / human rights brigade.
Suppose this extra income will be wasted yet again.
What the government need to do is to get to the people who contribute nothing to the country - and let them start contributing. Not leave it to both the car driver and british transport business to pay an ever increasing tax to pay for the non contributors.
Labour once again - is taxing the hardworking contributors to pay for this countries weaknesses.

What will they tax next ????

Surely - If it is cheaper for couples to split up and live apart to play the system - I tell you now, there is something Drastically wrong with this economy.

Posted by Mark Reilly, 27th September 2007 7:26pm

Raising petrol prices raises the price of everything as so many commodities are transported by road. Living out in the couontry as we do we have to travel to work and shop this means we have no choice but to pay and this reflects in what we can afford to buy. As with so many others it means a decrease in the standard of living. Its time the government recognised this.

I consider myself to be a 'normal' hard working english citizen who does not receive any 'benefits' and who pays her way but I seem to always be in the line for increases in my day to day expenses. The government should target those that bring disrespect to our country and not those that are trying our best to uphold our faithfulness.

Posted by Susan Barnett, 27th September 2007 7:28pm

We Brits allow ourselves to be "mugged off"and "do as we're told" left, right and centre. Whether it's out of control immigration, rising taxes or even the smoking ban. Why is that? We all openly moan/discuss/put-the-world-to-rights down the pub with our mates, don't you think it's about time we actually got off our pompous arses and DO SOMETHING??!! WHAT SAY YE? I for one will NOT be buying a single drop of fuel for my car on October 1st (seems to be the date of choice!), whether the tank is empty or not. But we ALL need to get behind the campaign. Why not take a leaf out of the French book? If they don't like the way their government runs things, they all pull together and DO something about it!! Just to change the subject slightly but remain to the point, did you know their is actually a smoking ban in place in France (you'd never know if you went to Paris!), the French chose to ignore it. Their attitude was; "WELL, THEY CAN'T ARREST ALL OF US CAN THEY?" Hear bloody hear!!

Posted by Karyn Lynch, 27th September 2007 7:28pm

dont you think we pay enough in tax we are the highest taxed nation in the europe to add more tax on our fuel will only increase prices elsewhere and will have a knock on efect on wage claims as the cost of living goes up on average it now costs around £50 to fill up your ford mondeo a familly car and famillies need all the money they earn to feed and put clothes on them selfs it is time to reverse our taxes not put them up

Posted by Kym Lawrence, 27th September 2007 7:28pm

It should be organised for everyone who can to use public transpoet for on day in protest to the petrol prices. The Government would soon take notice when the public transport system collapses due to the volume of people attempting to use it. Also petrol companies lose a days revenue.

Posted by B Nugent, 27th September 2007 7:28pm

These labour clowns have to fund their slalry increases some how. This contry is spiralling out of control and we just sit here and let it happen. WE are the fools! When a government forgets its purpose is to serve in the public interest then something must be done.

this government is the worst i have ever known, they will NEVER listen to the people who put them in POWER. look at the eu referendom,no vote for us ,we dont count. how can anyone with a brain in ther head vote for this bunch of liars, here we go again lets rape the motorist with more TAX on fuel.we are sitting targets they know we will just sit back and take it as we always do. i am worse of now in my pocket than i have ever been and it can only get worse.a 1 day ban on buying fuel?they wont even notice us although its better than nothing. staying away from a main station is a good choice need a weeek or too to make them sit up, but will they .i think not. this country is a mess from top to bottom,BLAIR+ BROWN= tax tax tax the sooner this lot are gone the better, but hold on things are looking better.....ill just give my self a nice big fat pay rise.......sorted.

Posted by M Batey, 27th September 2007 7:29pm

This government will stop at nothing to extract money from the hard-pressed taxpayer and will then generally squander it. I'd like to think that its voracious appetite for other peoples' money could be curbed but I doubt that this or any other camaign will make it change its spots. In the end the people will, if necessary, go without something else in order to keep on motoring. As someone has already said, there is ultimately the unassailable power the ballot box and it's ours. Let's use it when the time comes !

Posted by Sam Boyce, 27th September 2007 7:29pm

This is ridiculous and no doubt the rise will be put down as a green tax and I think that we motorists are being severely hammered by yet another increase in tax. Another reason why I am a disillusioned ex labour voter!!!!!

Posted by Swaran Rakhra, 27th September 2007 7:30pm

How many people are aware that Labour were just days away from an embarrassing downfall during the real blockades of 2000?

The 2005 protests were nothing more than rolling blockades which were route planned by the old bill.

We need to start French style protests to show this Government that we the people have had our lot with them.

Posted by Mick, 27th September 2007 7:30pm

One of the main reasons for me selling my home is so that I can walk or cycle to work, but at the moment I must use my car. If Alistair Darling would like to join me by walking the 28 mile round trip every day then maybe he would think again about this tax hike. Public transport isn't all it is made out to be either. I would have to allocate another 3 hours each day just for travel.

Posted by Chris Wilkinson, 27th September 2007 7:30pm

i'm sure you can remember when we had the same problem with a sugar shortage and that also put the cost through the roof, but people stopped going to certain shops etc which eventualy hit them and the price came down for a period of time.
would it not be a good idea if we could all try to do the same with petrol stations mainly those that are just taking too much as they certainly arent all the same as far as costs go and hopefully this would make possibly a little impact on peoples pockets.

Posted by Laurence Shine, 27th September 2007 7:30pm

The Governments taxes are not anything to do with the environment any more or they would encourage LPG or other fuels with incentives to convert. Also Bio fuels are nearly as dear as fossil fuels to buy.
Fuel taxes are just as it says, taxes to pay for the MP's wage rises and expenses.

Posted by Michael Attew, 27th September 2007 7:31pm

Well I'm one of those who has just emigrated. To Germany in my case. Part of the motivation for my move was the greater concern for the environment here. And I'm pleased to see petrol is no longer cheaper here than in the UK.

Although Biodiesel is much cheaper, so the next car I get will be able to run on that.

Posted by Tim Hewison, 27th September 2007 7:31pm

Posted by Swaran Rakhra, 27th September 2007 7:32pm

As an OAP I would like to think that that I will now receive an adequate increase in my pension to enable me to pay for the extra fuel costs needed to get to the cheaper out-of-town shops! Emigrate I say. Egypt is cheaper, was 7p per litre, warmer, no need for winter woolies

Posted by Geoff Fearnley, 27th September 2007 7:33pm

I would love to get rid of the car, but there is no alternative. Improve public transport FIRST and COMPEL car manufacturers to build environmentally friendly cars. Funny how the government is happy to legislate to compel some of us to do things but not others!!!

Posted by Pauline Osborne, 27th September 2007 7:33pm

I'M WITH YOU GEORGE, WE NEED A BLOCKADE TO LET THIS GOVERNMENT KNOW HOW FED UP WE ARE........FED UP IS SUCH AN UNDERSTATEMENT!!!!!

Posted by Mick Souter, 27th September 2007 7:34pm

This is going to hit us all. Why is it we ("they" in the Government's case) always make reference to "motorists", as if they are some sort of sub-group of society. The result of this increase is to increase the cost of living to us all, not just the "motorists".

Just as speed cameras collect money, so does fuel duty - it is a Government cash cow and we are all captive to it.

I suppose the Government has to claw back tax from somewhere as a result of their give-up smoking policy!!!

Posted by Joe Hanbury, 27th September 2007 7:34pm

cars are a fact of life safe from a to b and c ,door to door, but nobody wants them cameras ,parking wardens, fixed penalties every borough needs fines but do not want cars or vans. congestion charge yellow lines road tax insurances with tax etc how much does this all bring in would love to know.? why don't you publish gas prices at the pumps also and has any body tried to buy a van direct from a manufacture to run on gas only. If so where ,without sending it off to a conversion center.

Help, my mouse jumped just as I was clicking the yes button and it entered as a no in your petition. Anybody know how I can reverse this.

Come on Darling, give us a break !

I've got a business to run and all that happens is I have to put my prices up. It's just viscous circle.

In response to Amanda Lightfoots suggestion that traffic volume increases every month, road usage peaked in 2003 and has now levelled out. There are motorists who already NEED to use their car for commuting, I travel to work for a 5am start, 2 hours before the bus service starts. Why should people who have no option have to pay the same level of taxation as those who use a car unnecessarily? Fuel tax is unfair, another tax hike just applies more pressure to a large proportion of the country who could not work without private transport. Bring on a FAIR system of road charging, although the likelihood of it being fair is minimal.

As a motorist I whole heartedly agree with all the comments about the government hitting the motorist again. I am not related to the haulage business but it is blatently obvious that every time fuel duty is increased so does the cost of ALL goods sold in UK shops and this will impact everyone!
Labour are masters at the 'stealth' tax and this is yet another example. Income tax down Gordon - gee thanks for that but I'm still going to be worse off!!!!
