Every Penny Counts: PetrolPrices.com joins forces with FTA to fight duty rise

26th March 2009

(Aldershot, UK) PetrolPrices.com is joining forces with the Freight Transport Association (FTA) to support their new campaign, Every Penny Counts, after figures show next week's fuel duty rise could add a staggering £900 to the cost of running a single lorry.

Louise Doherty of PetrolPrices.com said: "It's important that people know the impact that a seemingly innocent 2 pence can have. It all adds up, for motorists and for businesses. Every penny really does count, so we're fully behind the FTA's campaign."

Jo Tanner of the FTA said:"We're delighted to have PetrolPrices.com on board with the Every Penny Counts campaign. If the Government goes ahead with the fuel duty increase on 1 April, motorists aren't going to be the only ones to notice it. Because of the current state of the economy, companies aren't going to be able simply to suck up the increased transport costs, so those increases are going to have to be passed on to consumers and we all end up out of pocket."

The duty rise comes at a particularly bad time for hauliers - they're facing inflation-busting fee hikes and other discretionary levies to the tune of around £600 per lorry, and a drop in business thanks to the biting recession — all of which could easily lead to significant job losses in the haulage industry.

Many businesses will have little choice but to pass on costs to their customers, which could mean a rise in the price of anything that needs to be transported - including food and drink.

To highlight the impact the duty hike will have on the haulage industry the FTA has launched Every Penny Counts — a campaign PetrolPrices.com is pleased to support.

The campaign calls for relief from both fuel duty increases and hikes in operating fees for hauliers from the Department for Transport.

Every Penny Counts has already received support from a number of MPs via Early Day Motion 994

To support the campaign visit www.fta.co.uk/epc, where you can request postcards to send to your local MP to ask them to support Early Day Motion 994, or join the Every Penny Counts Facebook group.

More than 10,000 people have commented on the PetrolPrices.com blog to voice their anger at the duty rise.

Petrolprices.com is the only free fuel price comparison website with reliable data and regular updates. It allows consumers to search for the cheapest stations in their area, with potential savings of 20p a litre.

Prices are updated each weekday between 11am and 12pm. Prices are collected the previous day using fuel card transactions in petrol stations to gather an average price for each station.

87% of 5000 users surveyed in September 2007 claimed the site saves them over £100 per year. As fuel prices rise the potential savings grow because the spread between the lowest and highest prices stations widens.
