Shell produces 20% of Britain’s crude oil, 17% of its gas and 15% of its petrochemicals. The company employ over 9,000 people directly and a further 6,000 in their subsidiary businesses. Shell businesses within the UK are part of the Royal Dutch Shell Group of companies, one of the largest industrial groups in the world.
In July 2005, the parent companies of Royal Dutch and Shell Transport merged and Shell’s operating companies are now owned by Royal Dutch Shell plc. Shell is based at Shell Centre on the south bank of the River Thames in London. Many global Shell businesses are also based in the UK, such as Oil Products, Chemicals, Renewables, Gas and Power, Aviation, Marine Products and Shell Services International (SSI). The trading and shipping subsidiary of the Oil Products business, Shell International Trading and Shipping Company (STASCO), is also based in London. It trades nearly four million barrels of crude oil a day. Around the UK over 900 Shell service stations currently operate.
With an extensive section on their website devoted to environmental issues, Shell seem to acknowledge problems such as climate change and seem to be taking action to find solutions. They state they are ‘committed to playing part in reducing the greenhouse gases’ and detail several ways in which they carry this out.
By investing money in making their operations energy efficient, their own greenhouse gases and emissions are lessened. It is noted that as a company they reduced greenhouse gas emissions by over 20% between 1990 and 2000, however the figures are now creeping back upwards.
As well as reducing their own emissions, Shell aim to help the public in reducing emissions by offering fuels with lower carbon content. They offer Autogas (LPG) at over 130 UK petrol stations. Committed to the use of alternative fuels where possible, Shell was one of the first UK retailers to make ultra-low sulphur fuels, improving fuel economy and reducing exhaust emissions and they are currently in the process of upgrading their Stanlow Refinery in the UK so it will be able to produce sulphur free fuels.
Shell also invests in renewable energy and has set up the separate busines, Shell International Renewables. They contribute to the generation of renewable energy by partnering with the UK’s first offshore wind energy development.
Shell V-Power now replaces Optimx which was developed with Ferrari, working alongside their Formula One Team, and with a main focus on responsiveness and track reliability. This improved formula features higher octane (99 RON).
V-Power aims to clean a vehicle’s engine as it’s used and as a result, aims to improve fuel economy and car performance.
Shell also offer Shell Diesel Extra, designed to clean the engine as it powers the car. This can result in improved engine performance and improved fuel economy. The fuel also aims to reduce emissions.
Shell Diesel Extra is a fuel with an exclusive formulation that is designed to clean the engine. This can lead to better engine performance and increased fuel economy as well as reduced emissions. Shell Diesel Extra contains a powerful detergent, which helps to clean away and reduce the build up of the harmful fuel system deposits that can collect in a diesel vehicle’s fuel injection system, reducing performance and fuel economy.
