About Maxol Fuel

Founded in 1920 by William McMullan, Maxol is a fourth-generation, Irish family-owned business in the forecourt retail convenience, fuel card and lubricant sectors.

The family started selling lubricating oil and paraffin in Belfast from the back of a horse and cart during WW1. By the early 1920s, they were the sole distributors of Mex Motor Spirit on the island of Ireland. Within a few more years, the brothers had one of the biggest truck fleets in Ireland and twenty-three depots. Maxol is an industry pioneer, leading the way with electronic pumps, blending, self-service, promotional campaigns, electronic card payments and green energy on the island of Ireland. The company has also transformed the brand to appeal to motorists over the years, with food-to-go and convenience stores developing their appeal.

Maxol sells premium fuel that claims to reduce build-up in the vehicle’s engine and improve power and acceleration.

The company’s growth plans will see an investment of €100M in its network over the next five years. The program aims to see a reduction in reliance on fossil fuels and a shift to EV charging and grocery offerings.

Maxol has around 100 forecourts in Northern Ireland, with a 0.4% UK retail fuel market share.
