About Co-op Fuel
The Co-op has interests in food, funerals, insurance, legal services and fuel. It started selling petrol and diesel in the 1990s and had a long-term relationship with the Texaco brand.
In August 2022, The Co-operative Group agreed to sell its 132 fuel stations to supermarket rivals Asda for £600m, saying the money would be reinvested in its grocery stores, keeping prices down and reducing debt. On 30th October 2022, Asda completed the sale.
The sale was referred to the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), which recommended the sale of 13 Co-op forecourts after reviewing the case. Asda agreed to this recommendation, and in late May 2023 approved, the CMA approved the deal.
In 2022 the Co-op had around a 1.2% market share of retail fuel sales in the UK.
The Co-op estate will be folded into Asda and rebranded, with a combined 450 sites operating under the supermarket brand. Asda said pumps and attached convenience stores would “create a new and distinct format for Asda in the convenience market”.
¹Not all Co-op fuel stations may offer premium grade fuels.
