About Tesco Fuel

Tesco first started selling petrol in 1974. Like most supermarket petrol stations, Tesco initially started selling branded fuel, either Gulf, Texaco or BP, but in the late 80s, their own brand of fuel went on sale. In October 2005, Tesco bought 21 supermarket forecourt stations from Morrisons, making them the UK’s number one supermarket fuel retailer.

All fuel sold in the UK must conform to the same British Standards. Base fuel is the same standard across the country. Tesco blends additives into all of its fuels: Tesco Unleaded, Tesco Diesel and Tesco Momentum 99. It does not sell premium diesel. Its premium unleaded, Momentum 99 contains a unique blend of additives to help keep the fuel system clean and working at its best. Additionally, the higher octane level (99 compared to 95 for regular unleaded petrol) improves overall engine performance for cars that can take advantage (generally sportier models). Tesco launched its customer loyalty scheme, the Tesco Clubcard, in 1995. It is cited as a critical development in Tesco’s progress towards becoming the UK’s largest supermarket chain and one that fundamentally changed the country’s supermarket business. From June 2023, Tesco is changing its Clubcard offering at fuel locations. From 14th June, the number of Tesco Clubcard points you collect will depend on how many litres of fuel you buy at a Tesco Petrol Filling Station. Customers will receive 1 point for every 2 litres of fuel, instead of 1 point for every £2 spent. This change applies to all Tesco stations. This change does not apply to Esso stations with a Tesco Express, as you can’t earn Clubcard points on fuel purchased.

Tesco is the market leader in fuel sold through its just over 500 forecourts in the UK. Over 15% of fuel sold through UK forecourts is from a Tesco site.
