Things to remember
When buying breakdown cover for your car, there are some questions that you should be asking yourself before you choose which level of cover you want, in order to get the best deal. For some help on how to decide which level of cover is best for you, take a few minutes to answer our questions below.
- Q. Do you want to be covered if you breakdown at home?
- A. If you want to receive assistance when you breakdown at home, make sure you choose from option 3 or 4 on our comparison above
- Q. Would you like to be covered when driving, or are the passenger of any car?
- A. For this type of cover you will need to purchase personal cover, but be aware that some breakdown providers may not offer this.
- Q. Would you prefer for your car to be covered, no matter who is driving it?
- A. If you only want your car to be covered, then you can opt for vehicle cover. This is normally a cheaper option.
- Q. Would you need the use of a hire car, or onward travel costs if you broke down?
- A. If you couldn’t imagine being without a car for a few days, whilst yours is fixed you need to make sure that onward travel costs are included. Have a look at option 4 on our comparison above. This normally includes the use of a hire car (normally for up to 72 hours), or emergency accommodation costs, or onward travel costs such as plane, or train tickets. Make sure you check the cover you are getting, as onward travel costs vary between providers.
- Q. How many call-outs are you allowed per year?
- A. The average amount of call-outs you are allowed per year is 5. This will vary between providers, and some may offer less than that. Normally if you exceed the amount of call-outs per year then you will incur call-out charges.
- Q. On average, how quickly will recovery services arrive?
- A. The average arrival time of recovery services is 40 minutes. This will vary between providers, and they will normally give priority to women, old or vulnerable people and mothers. Make sure you let them know your situation when you breakdown.
- Q. Can I earn a no claims discount if I don’t make any call-outs?
- A. It is possible with some breakdown providers to earn a no claims discount. Check with your provider to find out if this is something they will offer.
- Q. My car is 11 years old, can I get breakdown cover?
- A. If your car is older than 10 years then it becomes a bit more difficult to purchase breakdown cover. Some providers will offer it for cars up to 15 years old, but you may have had to join at 10 years. The best way to find out is to call each provider and ask.
